Pretty amazing when you think of it.

Emirates airline to only fly Airbus A380s, Boeing 777s after retiring older planes

The Middle East carrier recently retired its last remaining Airbus A330 and A340 planes from active service.

Emirates is the largest operator of the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft with 85 Airbus A380s and 160 Boeing 777s in its fleet. The airline has 150 orders on its books for the new Boeing 777X aircraft. It's is due to take delivery of its first 777X in 2020.

Reminds me of when QF was an all B747 and all Rolls Royce airline.

Not really surprising and probably soon will just be an A380 and 777-300ER fleet as they will retire the 777-200LR and the 777-300. Also how many different 777 configurations of Business Class will there be?

Just two I think, and both will be 2-3-2.

Wonder where the 330s have gone?

According to the article the last 330 in the fleet was 14 years old, so likely returned to the lessor.

Also interesting that they have retired all their 777-200ER's.

EDIT: seems that a few have gone into storage

All 380s and 777s...until they buy 787s and 350s.

I'm not surprised about 777-200s.

I think they play games with the manufacturers. Order a whole bunch, threaten to cancel, etc. Mind you, given how congested Dubai is, they'd be better of buying an adjacent country.

Undoubtedly. EK has been rather demanding about what they want in an airframe and aren't afraid to hold out for what they want.

I'm surprised Emirates can fill 777s for all the destinations they serve considering they operate a Hub and Spoke model and I assume some would have fairly low volume. Even SQ and CX rely on their sister narrowbody jets to make their model work.

Perhaps, but I think the games are of a more financial nature. For instance, any twitch from them would kill the 380, as well and severely denting the prospects of the 777X. I'm not sure that I've seen any airframe input of note.

Of course they're financial, anyone buying in that sort of volume would be silly not to try and drive a bargain.

Tim Clark is on the record as saying that EK defined the design of the 777X
