Just as I was trying to get into MH they had issues with MH370 and MH17. I am not blaming them but I am scared.

I am avoiding MH flights but may book them BKK-KUL-SIN for the SIN lounge crawl in June 2015 as I need a Oneworld carrier for lounge access.

If you're superstitious just remind yourself that the short hops are operated by 737's, whilst MH 17 and MH 370 were both 777s...

I've had two returns to Australia this year one since MH 370 and the other since MH 17 with two more to go. The long haul economy sectors were very spacious (4 seats to myself) and I even upgraded one set of flights (MEL-KUL-SIN) for 25k miles and in my next lot I have one upgrade confirmed as well in the other direction.

That makes MH even better value for OZ-Europe business class return

MH 88,696 amex points with 15% bonus
SQ 160,000 amex points
TG 170,000 amex points
CX 175,000 amex points
VA 250,000 amex points (but ~$700 lower taxes)
QF 256,000 amex points
NZ 400,000+ amex points (?)

Looks like they are cutting MH147 KUL-MEL (20:15 departure) on some days in October/November, rebooked onto MH149 23:50 departure

Ok found more slightly more substantiated info, long hauls are going to be cut

As their traffic is down, that is not really surprising. Particularly on routes like MEL which have multiple daily departures.

taxes and Charges are comparable to SQ or Qantas.

Booked online the cheapest J return to Europe is 102,000 points. Once that bucket is exhausted the points cost goes up.

If you get the 15% bonus it then will cost you less than 102K in the MR points you had to transfer.

Availabity has always been good, when compared to SQ, let alone the hard to get QF J seats. After the two recent misfortunes it is even better.

I think the consensus is that MH J can be a bit variable, but is generally pretty good BUT is a tier below the best J like SQ.

However in terms of value it is a great J redemption if your points are Aussie credit cards.

Westpac and Amex can bot be could sources of MH points ...and both have had 15% transfer deals to discount the cost of MH points even more.

My Westpac Black Amex earns 1.5 MH points per $.- is link to my Paypal, and for businesses that take Amex.

My Edge Amex earns 3 points per $ at Supermarkets including many Gift cards.

My Reserve Amex earns 2 points at travel spend

etc...

The Amex Edge using the 15% means that as little as $29,565 spend will earn you a J return to Europe + taxes. (Plus may have earnt some Everday points too - I average about 4 QFF points per $ spent at WOW)

The Amex direct cards also have various promos from time to time for a bit of supercharging.

Mine have posted too.

I put through enough for two J returns to Europe.

This seems to happen at least once a year. So that will do me for now as I am already off to Africa mid next year.
