Alaska Airlines is running a promo where you can earn double Mileage Plan miles on Qantas trans-Pacific flights. This offer could be interesting to some people that don't want/need Qantas status credits, as Mileage Plan miles are quite valuable.

You have to register on the Alaskan website, book by 30 April and travel between 1 May and 6 December this year. The booking can be on AS or QF flight numbers.

Most Qantas economy fare classes (except for a couple of the deep discount sale buckets) normally earn 100% of actual miles flown with Mileage Plan. Premium economy earns 110%, Business 125% (+100% additional bonus) and First class 150% (+200% additional bonus). I believe the offer is only for double base miles, not including the premium cabin bonuses.

As an example, you'd earn 31,684 Alaskan miles on a round-trip MEL-LAX ticket with this promotion. (It would cost around $1,200 just to buy that many miles from Mileage Plan at full price.) And the premium cabin earn would be really quite substantial.

Noticed that the Alaska Air website refers to this promotion as applying to flights on nominated routes FROM the USA TO Australia. Does this mean that bookings FROM Australia TO the US are not eligible for double points?

I believe bookings from Australia to the USA are also eligible. There's nothing in the T&Cs to say that only ex USA departures qualify, and the eligible flights list says "between" the Australian and US destinations. And in previous Mileage Plan promos, flights in both directions have earned earn double miles.
