I notice that "Starpoints never expire as long as you have Starpoints activity at least once every 12 months." (as per the SPG website).

I'm not going to Perth this year, so won't be able to stay at the Sheraton there, but want to keep my SPG points ticking over. Would a redemption of Starpoints into say, AAdvantage miles, count as "Starpoints activity" or do you have to actually stay at a Starwood hotel to qualify?

Its probably best to send a PM to one of the Lurkers on FT for an exact response.

However I believe by dining / spending at any of their hotels would count as an activity. So why not have dinner there?

You have to have a meal or stay at a Starwood property for your account to stay active. See the Terms and Conditions:

3.2. You will be considered an "Active Member" so long as (a) your Membership has not been cancelled (by you or us), and (b) you have had an Eligible Stay at a Participating Property within the previous 12 months, or (c) you have earned Starpoints by using a Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card during the previous 12 months. Starpoints resulting from transfers or earnings from Program affiliates do not count toward active status. Owners are not subject to the Eligible Stay requirement and will continue to be considered an Active Member as long as they own their Vacation Ownership interest and maintain their Starwood Vacation Ownership account in good standing.

On that reading, having a meal at a Starwood location and having the points credit (can you get Starpoints out of a meal that isn't during a stay?) doesn't constitute being an Active Member - only using the Starwood Credit Card (not an option in Australia) or staying with Starwood Properties is (assuming I don't want to get a Starwood timeshare!).

Do you have experience with meals alone getting points credited to the SPG account and then this qualifying as program activity?

I might have to give them a call.

I am sure that Starwood Lurker on Flyer Talk has advised that a meal at a Starwood hotel that earns points counts as activity for keeping your membership current. You don't have to be staying at the hotel.
You could check through the search facility on FT, the topic keeps coming up.

Gentle reminder that meals or drinks spent at a restaurant/bar located in a Starwood property may or may not be eligible for credit so it would be best if you ask before dining or entering the bar.
