Hey Folks,
Need some help.
I am flying LA- MEL and I want to carry a TV with me from here since it's cheap.
About 1700$ difference.
So 2 questions
1:Will Qantas allow it ?
2: Any idea on the customs/duty ? My MIL is gifting it to my wife.

Thanks

I have seen people checking in and picking up big flat screens so I guess as long as its dimensions don't exceed baggage limitations you should be OK.

No idea about duties

I checked their website and they allow
62 Inch max dimensions. My TV is about 65 inch. If I pay will they allow it ?

10% GST will be payable to customs, unless the total value is less than the total of: number of adults travelling together x$900+ number of children x$450
Yeah and 5% Duty. But still the saving ends up to 1000 AUD.

@ozjuice
Yea. But the TVs are 120-240Volts I think.

A lot of electronic equipment these days uses active PFC power supplies which can handle a wide range of input voltages, but still it's something the OP would need to check.

sure about the 5%? A large number of goods from the USA have 0 tariff from 2015. Unfortunately all listed by schedule number, and I don't have time to find the right number. I suppose it doesn't matter since if they don't charge 5% it's just a bonus.

Although there is a FTA between Australia and the USA if the TV is manufactured in Taiwan (for example) it won't qualify for 0% exemption even though it was imported from the USA. Just got caught with this with some electronic equipment we imported from the USA but was manufactured in China.

They may but I'd hate to imagine what the cost could be.
If it was me I'd be making some phone calls in advance rather than end up at the airport hoping for an acceptable outcome.

Firstly, it depends on the dimensions of the box. If it exceeds the maximum dimensions for checked luggage, then it'll have to go as freight and that won't be cheap.

More importantly, are you confident that the TV would survive a drop of a metre of two. I'm sure you've heard how airlines treat musicians' guitars - there's been a number of well-publicised incidents of how they've been smashed into pieces. Qantas won't reimburse you if they damage it, for their advice is to put any valuable or fragile items in your cabin luggage.

Finally, will it have an international warranty?
