I am not trying to kill myself in the hotel room ?

We all know, as part of a status run, sometimes we need to stay overnight, and to save personal non deductable funds I usually travel alone, often check in very late, for one night....

I always get a funny, sometimes worrying look by the check in clerk, which I never gets if I am travelling with someone.

I think they might think I am a suicide risk....

so how can I remove their worry ? showing them my Qantas app and how close I will be a WP after this trip ???

I nearly always travel by myself, and often check in late etc etc. Why on earth would the check-in person think otherwise that you are just a normal guest? The reason that have people on duty late is because people check in and out late/early all the time. :)

Wow....I regularly check in late on my own and have never considered that the desk clerk would think I was about to top myself.

Is that a common occurrence in hotel rooms?

the "funny look" could be for a multitude of reasons, maybe they just thinking - late night - very little luggage - you had a barny with the better half and need a bed for the night.

Yeah, that night it was cold, it was winter and the city is in the extra low season.

I don't look good because the flight was delayed 3 hrs ( thanks QF). I had only a back pack and did not opt in for breakfast !!

Yes, according to the hoteliers forums etc, if they travel alone, obviously not for business, not for leisure, not happy, alone. That's a big warning sign !!!

I've been to many a hotel by myself, late at night with extremely early check outs, and never did I think the receptionist thought anything of it.

Besides who cares what the hotel staff think, you'll either never see them again in your life or you'll see them enough that they know short stays are simply your thing.

As an ex hotelier I have never given that a thought, although I have found a few that didn't make it through the night. Natural causes, a murder but no suicides

now more I think about it... I was given a room which is in need of renovation (quite worn), and when I leave my room the next morning the cleaner was right there at the corridor and watching me too !

Male, checking in late at night for a single night.

A. Hes travelling on business - see it all the time and would be my first assumption

B. Hes left the family home for a night to cool off and wonder what he did

:) not really , I catch people's emotions and reactions quite well,

the difference of how hotel staff look at me (at that night) compare with when I am on business travel, or leisure trip with the other half, is quite profound …. and I always wondered why...

you might be paranoid?

I did not dress up for business travel, just a small casual backpack....
a quick status run on the weekend, started 8pm Friday night ….

A lot of the staff wouldn't even have a clue what a status run would be anyway!

When you walk into a room (or hotel lobby) do you think that everybody is looking at you. :p

You forgot an option:

C. Meeting someone (later) at the hotel.

Who does? You're overthinking this. Go to the hotel check in and by the time you've gotten to your room they've forgotten you.

They serve hundreds of customers per day and unless you're a cough you're just another face to process and get on their way.
