With the recent devaluation of the Platinum Edge card, and Christmas coming up, the David Jones American Express card could be a good low annual fee card option for people who collect Qantas points or Starwood points, with excellent ongoing point-per-dollar earning power, and the ability to get the annual fee waived after the first year (in my case, anyway – YMMV).

The card comes with a $99 annual fee and a sign on bonus of 30,000 Rewards Points (the equivalent of 15,000 Starwood points) or 22,500 Qantas points. The sign on bonus is the same, whether you apply through a referral link or just the standard link, but if you are kind enough to use my link, I'll earn 10,000 points as a referral bonus: http://amex.com.au/refer/anneme6reL?CPID=999999367

Key card benefits
While not everyone is a DJ’s fan, it’s a pretty handy card for us in our household (and great at Christmas time), as it comes with:
  • Free standard delivery and giftwrapping year round – so you can get a $10, wrapped gift delivered to someone J
  • Early access to DJ sales (such as being able to access an extra 40% off already reduced prices days before the general public)
  • Free sup cardholder to maximise the AMEX statement credit offers (fee is supposed to be waived for the first year only – but I ring annually to ask for both the card and sup card annual fee to be waived and AMEX always agrees to do so)

Point per dollar earn
The point-per-dollar earning power of this card is also very good for those collecting Qantas or Starwood points. You’ll earn the equivalent of 2.25 Qantas / 1.5 Starwood points per dollar spent at major supermarkets & petrol stations, 1.5 Qantas / 1 Starwood point per dollar spent at David Jones and 0.75 Qantas points / 0.5 Starwood points per dollar spent everywhere else.

I'm not aware of any devaluation to the Platinum Edge card, are you able to point me in the direction of this deval?

I'm guessing that the OP is referring to the fact that new Platinum Edge card holders get a $200 travel credit instead of the free return flight.

To some people this would be a devaluation, to others an improvement - either way I still reckon the Edge is the best value card going around!!! And of course it doesn't effect existing card holders (at the moment).

Does anyone know if buying a Gift Card from Coles counts towards receiving reward points that can be converted to Qantas FF. For example if I was to buy a card for $1000, would this be counted as a supermarket purchase, as I believe that on the monthly statement it may not show up as a Coles purchase?

All gift cards purchased at Coles or Woolies using the DJ Amex card, will appear on your statement and points allocated like any other transaction, ie 2.25 QFF points per $ spent.

At Christmas time last year, I bought literally tons of gift cards at Coles, as I had a targeted Flybys offer for 3 points per dollar on all gift cards. On top I earn 2.25 QFF points per $ spent as I used my DJ Amex card for payment.

INCREASED SIGN UP BONUS FROM TODAY

Last chance to apply this month and transfer the bonus to SPG before the lower upcoming Amex to Marriott conversion switch,

One can switch to QFF Points for better value.

EXISTING AMEX cardholders eligible as well.
