anyone here with experiences on the differences of these CX planes (either in Y or J) such that I should lean towards one or the other?

planning to redeem QFF on CX for intra-Asia flights and couple of the routes have a mix of planes and not sure which one is better

I've flown in all classes on these configs over the past year.

In economy there isn't much difference although 773 you will have slightly more space.
340 will have old seats which slide forward. Personally I prefer them but not everyone shares this view.

Not all configs have PE but they are virtually identical.

Business is where the differences are clear.
773 and 33x have both fully flat and angled seats
772 have angled seats
77Z/G have angled seats
77H has flat beds and first class
33G/K have flat beds
340 has flat beds, but they are old herringbone where your feet point towards the aisle

Easiest way to tell is look at expertflyer and if seating is 1-2-1 in biz then it's flat seats. Angled will show as 2-2-2 or 2-3-2

As for jumpseats - 77x has more leg room

You really can't go wrong and there's no 'bad' seats on CX. The only thing I would avoid is being behind the engines

thanks trippin_the_rift!

that is a nice comprehensive list - i think its just about knowing the difference between the full flat vs angled seating.

quick question though - what is the difference between 33x and 33G/K and how do you know which one is which?

From the seat map. Flat beds will show 1-2-1 while regional seats/not flat will show as 2-2-2 and in some cases 2-3-2 (777s)

While trippin_the_rift provides a good summary, the bottom line is that you should probably take the flight that suits you the most in terms of timing. Aircraft for short-haul intra-asia are routinely swapped, even at last minute (like after check-in). Planning for a full flat bed is a bit of a lottery.

The Tokyo route is a bit different - one of those daily flights (used to be operated by a 747 but i think even that's gone now) has guaranteed F. That wil always have flat beds in business.

If you have any sort of status with QF (silver or above), you get free exit rows on CX.

While YMMV, I find the shell seats in economy on some intra-asia regional flights horribly uncomfortable for anything more than an hour. (Which is why CX got rid of them at great expense.)

Thanks MEL_Traveller - I'll keep the aircraft change in mind. One of the routes I need to take is TPE-HKG - and there is a wide range of selection, and with the advice of AFFers and not hvaing experienced CX premium cabin, I am planning to choose the 777-300ER CX :)

To TPE? I think best to go into it with an expectation of an equipment swap. And if you get the plane you thought you would that's a bonus :)
