Was only a matter of time. What surprises me is that BA hasnt jumped on this too and still offer 9 abreast according to the table and seat guru.

i wonder if airlines will make economy so miserable people just give up on flying?

will the revenue of an extra 25 seats be worth the risk people think jetstar or scoot are now a viable alternative since the seats will be pretty much the same?

A majority of people flying Y are driven by price and not much else. I know many people who have sworn to "never fly XX airline again".

They flew that airline again.

I'm going to lose DM soon as I don't fly out of HKG much anymore when I travel around Asia, I've given up on CX. I used to book CX without comparing fares out of loyalty till someone opened my eyes on other airlines. If CX thinks they can be one of the most expensive legacy carriers and cut cost and pull stunts like that, they are just going to lose more MPC members.

I'll get to Gold on VA soon and SQ covers all my Asian destinations I need to visit.

Another reason to avoid Boeings (777 10 across and 787 9 across). The a330 and a350, a380 are the way forward for those in economy .

Hopefully SQ resist the urge to follow CX. Maybe, as SQ are now starting to receive the A359 and generally do not keep their aircraft very long, it may not be cost effective to retrofit their 777 anyway.

A bunch of airlines already introduced 'Basic Economy' which is like Y- to their frequent flyer program. Seems natural the airline side will follow in good time...
However, in saying this, almost every major airline has 17" width already.

So either CX has failed to show travellers their economy has more space, or people only care about price.

Personally, I think there is a case to drop economy seats entirely. Make premium economy the new economy.

Lol.

Maybe they should call it Yelfare.
Meanwhile I only fly Business when Daddy has the G5 (sarcasm)

Reality is majority of the demand is still for the cheapest fare - and you create cheaper fares by squeezing in more seats and cutting other costs

Personally I expect more differentiation of Y cabins on the big jets - 32" v 30", a wider seat in some rows etc.

True. I can understand the argument, esp when you're paying for 4 tickets, that gettign the cheaest price for what is generally the shortest part of the holiday is a worthwhile compromise. i just can't bring myself to fly to europe in that kind of cramped seat. i'd need a week at the chiro and physio to get my back into shape.

Considering airbus is spruiking 11 across on the lower deck of the A380, A350 can go to 10 across and prob will as the years go by, just like the progression to 10 across on the 777.

i still shudder with memories of my Y flight to bali last year on VA, and the thought of being like that for 12+ hours is the stuff of nightmares.

It will all happen... because no matter how much SOME folks moan afterwards, the majority of them will still use price as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd determinant when booking.

I say SOME because I have friends who took their possibly-once-ever trip to the USA (our sport is based there) in the back of an NZ 777.... and their comments were all about how good the IFE was etc....(OK.. many of my friends are NOT BIG people)

I think we might overestimate just how many people find it unacceptable.

So... the majority choose based on price.... the airlines cater to that by doing what it takes to be competitive on price... MOST folks are ...well...maybe not happy.. but satisfied....

More and more we can choose Premium Y cabins... which is what I do... so its not as if there is no choice.

The choice that doesn't exist of course..which some want regulation to provide...is more room... at no more cost. That is my take on many of the complaints we do hear...... call me a cynic...

Yeah, that is sometimes what this boils down to, though I think there's a valid point to be made that we are at the point where seat size is becoming a health hazard.

I just keep fearing when a high density plane needs to get everyone off if that is going to be possible with scared people who sometimes grab their bag by reflex and stuggle to get out of their narrow seat and down what feels like narrower aisle to get off safely.

i quite like the yello seats that scoot offered ont eh old 777-200 planes (thik they've redeployed to nokscoot now) where you could get 35-36 seat pitch with same recline as economy for around $50 on the SYD - SIN route. I was quite happy to pay that. The pax on the inside could get out easily without me needing to get out of my seat. It's a shame with the 787 they no longer offer this product.

Unless Pe is on sale I just find the cost to be too high for what you get. Would interesting to know what the economics are in terms of rev from the same space in economy. Are airlines ripping us off?
