Hi All,

Absolutely nothing new in my post, just feel I have to vent a little.

I have been a self funded WP member for the last 5 or so years. it hasn't always been easy to maintain and has often required a number of status runs and certainly opting for more expensive fares on a regular basis. I have reached LTG.

I can't argue that I haven't enjoyed some of the benefits of WP when they have actually worked like "priority" boring, additional availability of award flights, access to the F lounges and so on. I don't drink alcohol, have never had a massage and I suspect it doesn't cost a lot to Qantas for me to be a WP member. Not sure why I really said all that. I suppose I am not really taking full advantage of the benefits available to me and wondering if it is worthwhile to maintain.

I am about to book a couple of J flights to either London or Paris for late March 2014. The so called Early Bird sale fare is $8,165 return to London on QF 9 and QF 10. If I book this, I may have an opportunity to point upgrade to F subject to availability.

But I just can't get my head around the significant price differencial between Qantas and the other carriers. $7149 Singapore Airlines, $7117 Etihad, $6759 Qatar, $7974 Emirates, $7059 Cathay Pacific, $7768 Thai. I really don't know if I should finally cut the strings and try another airline and save at least $2K. Is it really worth the extra $$$?

One question, does anyone have any positive feedback on any of the agencies who may offer discounted BC tickets, rather than the fares available through the respective web sites.

Sorry, I know this is an old chestnut, just that it can be so frustrating sometimes.

Kind regards ninin

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

CX was nearly the least costly and you'd still get SCs with them. Unless you need the squiggles as well.

No AFFer should be paying more than $5K to Europe in J  . Status is good at one end of the plane, but don't let it override common sense and looking at alternatives that will see travel in more comfort (ie F) at nowhere near J pricing, OK, so you don't get any points, but you will have a smile when you check the bank balance.

I would go CX, probably better service, you already have LTG, and like you said you probably dont use all the WP benefits therefore perhaps not worth chasing (noted the sc runs).

But, if you want to chance to upgrade to F..... then.... its like a 2k gamble with not so good odds (particularly if not WP)

J is J so no difference in SCs. Go CX and you can use all of the facilities anyway and save $2k for future travel.

Agree with this idea. Get the points (granted, no status bonus) and the same SCs as you would with QF, and enjoy a fantastic product, excellent lounges in HK, and of course the extra savings. Even if you need the squiggles, you could use the money you saved on the fare to do a cheap domestic squiggle run.

That's all well and good, but what is the cost to fly all the way from, say, Melbourne to Paris in J?

Depends on how you mix it, you can lifemiles J with SQ to KUL for $1200-1400 return if you want a mix of earn and burn, or just burn all the way with US Air, 120000 miles to Europe is probably around $2500 return in J, and then there is the little points plus pay trick with MH, not quite the same cost as US Air but easier to book.

Get to Darwin and then MH to LHR return for two is $9500 in J. Just booked for Jun/Jul peak. Long stopover in KL on way over (19 hours) so I booked a two day stay - returning is 5 hours stopover. Try also looking at from other ports - QF PER-SIN-LHR used to be many thousands cheaper than from the East Coast.

MH were offering J tickets from SYD/MEL to CDG for about $5000. You can probably still get tickets for under $6000.
I don't know how QF can justify these prices of >$8000.

Hear Hear! People often lose some common sense when it comes to these things. The most I have ever paid for a J ticket to Europe over the last 3-4 years was $6100. Every time except one, I've paid <$6000. Not paying more than $5k to Europe is really difficult, markis10. I have only managed that once and I don't fly airlines like China Southern (or any other China-based airline for that matter), Royal Brunei or Vietnam Airlines...

Just checked for you and MH are still offering MEL to CDG in J for late March for <$5500. That's a saving of >$2500 compared to QF!

Ok. That's different then. I never use redemption tickets for myself, so I'm always paying for them outright. All my free tickets go to my partner and my dear mother. :p

Reinforcing my point that sometimes you need to forget earning miles and status, even on MH:

Help me understand how this works - you book an MH award (in D class!) and only pay $3,400 odd plus 1,000 Enrich Miles??
