Can anyone advise how to convert paper share holdings (UK company) to online holdings (so they can be traded via a local broker) or advise of a broker who can assist?

It seems the share registry in the UK is unable (?unwilling) to assist anyone who is non-UK/EU resident.

Have tried the usual online brokers who just direct you to seek help from the UK, and the UK registries tell you to contact a local (AU) broker.

Frustrating.

Get in touch with your local bank that you deal with, if they have an investment side they will take care of it.
My father did the same thing with NAB.
Then you can transfer them to any online / other stockbroker of your choosing

I'd be interested to hear if this can be done (ie online).

One the couple of occasions I wanted to sell shares of companies listed on the London Stock Exchange I had to go through my local broker, provide them with several bits of documentation proving my ownership of the shares (in one case, my Super Fund, and that I was a Trustee) - this was required by the UK authorities - plus written authorisation to them to sell the shares, then they got their UK broker affiliate to sell the shares. coughbersome the first time, easier the second.

I'll PM you the name of my broker (a well known 'legacy' one).

My local bank has said they wont deal in physical share certificates (only online holdings) and directed me to the UK share registry to convert.

The UK share registry directed me back to my local bank.

You may need to go through an actual stockbroker.
I know the person we used to deal with at NAB went back to his previous job at Black Swan equities which are now another stock broker, I forget the name.

Maybe that is why he was able to take care of it?

I looked at this a few months ago but didn’t progress it very far.
I have a portfolio of British shares being my own and those inherited from my father and an ever growing folder of share certificates as dividends are reinvested.
I have also kept a current British bank account ever since my long lost youth.
My bank (HSBC UK) has a share dealing service which holds shares electronically. (Similar to the on line broking services offered by Australian banks).
It is also possible to transfer existing certificated shares into the account. These are then held electronically by a nominee company and can be sold or transferred over the internet.
Most UK banks have similar services. But I haven’t yet gone as far as setting it up, so I don’t know how easy it is or how one would do it if one didn’t have British bank account.
There are also similar non-bank internet dealing services.
Once set up the buying and selling should be simple.
