Have been doing some research into points upgrades (Y to J) with SQ, but am a little confused. They list three types with very different pricing:
Saver Award
Standard Award
Full Award

Could someone please explain to me what the difference is? I'd likely fly MEL-LHR

(It would all be much easier if Velocity would just hurry up and introduce long-haul upgrade redemptions.. :!: )

Make sure that you purchase an 'upgradeable' Y fare. The lowest prices SQ fares may not always be used for upgrades.

Can someone tell me how we can see availability? I have a flex-saver booked next week but am thinking of seeing if I can pay extra to get to 'Flexi' class and then burn some miles for Y>J? Don't want to commit unless there is availability..

If you see J availability then a J upgrade is available.
So if you see a J saver available, then so is a J saver upgrade.
Likewise for Standard and full awards.

If you have to pay to go to Flexi, also look at the cost/benefit of just doing a clean redemption and getting a refund if possible on your paid tix.

Obviously this would depend on J availability of your itinerary and what refund (if any) is available. I'm just thinking that by the time you pay for the upgrade to flexi and then use miles, you might by just as cost effective to just do a whole new redemption booking.

Thanks guys, I see J standard and full availbilty but no saver available.

I know what your saying albatross710, I may have a quick look at it but am thinking I may just slum it in Y. Both of the 8hr legs are overnight and I am pretty lucky with being able to sleep anywhere... including Y :)

Yp, can always splurge on a good meal prior to boarding and a nice(r) hotel upon arrival.

Even I'm prepared to go Y where it makes for a better trip. Going everywhere in Asia via SIN with SQ does have its drawbacks. In the trip I just booked this morning, it is just more attractive to take direct Y flights with QF direct BNE-HKG and due to the finish time of the conference in HKG the QF trip will take a day off the journey. I was surprised to see that SQ didn't have an end of day flight that would meet up with an overnight back to BNE.
