My daughter and her partner (both NB) are flying SYD-NRT next month.
Are they able to combine their 30kg baggage allowance and take 3 x 20kg bags?

(At this stage I don't think it will be a problem - their snowboard bag weighs around 20kg and they hope they will only need one more bag but you never know!)

I would doubt it, airlines are generally pretty strict on the quantity of items you check in. Sometimes less so about the weight as long as you're not crazily over.

I disagree - if they are are on the same booking with a weight based allowance generally there shouldn't be an issue but as always YMMV

Then why wouldn't airlines just have weight restrictions? They obviously don't want to carry 30 x 1kg packages as that involves extra handling (an extreme example I know).

Surely in this case, the one with the snowboard could check in only 10 additional kgs in one bag and the other half a bag weighing 30 kg

This may not always be the case, but when ever I have traveled with my wife on the same ticket with QF, lets say we have 23kg limit each but we have 40kgs of bags over 3 bags, if checking in at the desk the attendants just puts all the bags against one persons name on the baggage receipt, thus a combined limit.
However when checking in at the self serve bag drop belt, even when 2 pax on the same ticket it enforces the bag limit per pax, I had 3 bags traveling domestically recently however upon putting the 3rd bag on the belt under my name it was asking for excess baggage charge, so cancelled the 3rd bag and put it under my wifes boarding pass.

YMMV

But the flight is on a weight based allowance, not a piece base. That makes your argument moot.

Altea allows pooling of baggage under one passenger who is elected as the head. Whilst not applicable to your situation specifically, it does need to be the passenger with the highest status.

Given NRT is a weight based allowance, you are free to check in whatever quantity you like, providing you do not exceed 60kg total.

When you fly internationally on QF and the baggage allowance is 30kg pp it doesn't matter how many pieces you have as long as the combined weight of all the bags does not exceed 60kg total per couple so they'll be fine with 3 x 20kg bags or 4 x 15kg bags.

The $75.00 heavy fee is not applied even if they had 2 x 30kg bags as the charge is only when the piece system is used eg within Australia or to USA/Canada/South America unless pax is PS or above in which case it doesn't apply here.

If you're WP & you checkin at the desk your baggage would be pooled but the receipt would be under your name if you hold the highest tier status so all 3 bags can weigh up to 32kg each.

The above scenario happens if you are using Qtags on all the bags so it looks at the individual allowances eg a WP would get 2 @ 32kg & a NB would get 1 @ 23kg hence you having to send two bags under your name and one under that of your wife.

If you both checkin at the same time at a kiosk and get at least one paper tag then it will pool your baggage as it would by checking in with a CSA at the desk so you'd only need to scan your boarding pass then send the 2 bags with Qtags plus the one bag with the paper tag without having to scan your wife's boarding pass as well.

Thanks for the info I'll be sure to try it like this next time.
I wonder how many unknowingly pay the excess even though they may be entitled to more luggage when using Qtags at self checkin?
