Iceland is a big change from CNS isn't it...the weather can be a PITA but changes quickly, if it is good it is well worth it. I had my snowmobiling cancelled too but later saw the lights so you win some you lose some.
Weather wise, I probably went at the worst time of the year. Crowds wise, probably the best time. Glad you saw the lights. Apparently the solar activity cycle is about 11years between high activity and it is about midway through that cycle, so not much activity to start with, but cloud cover prevents even that being seen.

You certainly set a cracking pace on this trip. I have to admit that the weather you experienced would have depressed me by the end. Thanks for the photos and commentary.

I have relatives who spent 2 weeks in Iceland, at the right time of year, they never had a clear night to see lights...there is a lot of luck involved with the weather and solar activity, no app gets it 100% correct. I had one week and saw them twice...they were pretty good I thought but the guide called them "average"...you always want better.

On a trip to Northern Norway to see the lights I got a blizzard for the 3 days I was there, planes delayed, caught a cold, slipped on ice etc...should have stayed home. (UK at the time luckily not CNS)

If I luck out with the weather or something closed, I compare it to a tourist coming to CNS and getting 30 knot winds and rain on their reef trip. You are still disappointed but you gotta try.

The service was fine and the plane was full, so I'm not sure what their financial problems were.

Cheap fares and unusual baggage allowance/restrictions :( Their cabin baggage allowance used a smaller bag than is accepted on any other airline that I've flown on, and while this was made clear on their website, it caused a major inconvenience having to check the bag in rather than take it on board or gate-valet it. One and only time I flew with flybe, and never again. If they hadn't been so miserable I wold have flown them more.
