Is it really necessary to close threads?

Sometimes there can be a valid contribution to a great thread, a year later. In the past there were a few examples of this, but now it forces us to open a new thread when it may make more sense to continue an old one.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers

I believe threads automatically close after 18 months inactivity now, however if you find a thread that would be better suited with a reply, instead of a new thread, PM a moderator and they’ll likely open it for you.

That is my understanding of how it is meant to work also.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It is a rare situation, but certainly can happen. So if you find you have a valid addition to a closed thread, just send a PM to the mods and we can re-open the auto-closed thread.

Ok, thanks this is helpful, although a valid reason to me may not feel valid to everyone else, might just be a continuation of a theme.

Is there a purpose to the auto close?

Cheers

Yes there is a purpose to the auto close, it's pretty rare to have a topic be current when it's 18 months down the track, especially with the ever changing airline scene.

Continuing a theme may be better to start a new thread with a link to the old one. Adding a new post to an old thread can be confusing if people don't look at the posting date/time stamp, and may think they are reading a new post or thread only to later find out that what they are reading is several years old.

This can also lead to confusion if something has changed in the time since the original thread was started. For example, imagine an old thread about exercising anytime lounge access and since the rules have changed much of the old information may no longer be accurate.

So its generally better to start a new thread and link to the old one of there is relevant reference information there.

Threads auto-close to try to minimise the risk of an old thread being resurrected with out-of-date information.
