Re: Jetstarisation of CNS Routes

China Southern are staring to CNS in October.

Indeed they are!
Aviation Business: Cairns to get China Southern

Their reputation with the average Australian punters that I talk to is pretty poor so they'll probably struggle to generate much outbound demand (which seems to be pretty much the case with their ops in every Australian port) but it's about the only vaguely positive news for Cairns tourist operators in many, many years.

True - but I wouldn't dismiss China Southern in the long run - and there is no doubt that they are in it for the long run. Everyone is laughing at the Chinese car manufacturing industry now but they won't be laughing in 3-5 years time. In my opinion it will be the same steep learning curve that other Chinese products have already succesfully surmounted.

If tourism comes alive again and enough people from mainland China want to see Australia then they will make money on it eventually. For the residents of Cairns it must be good news on two fronts - both inbound tourism bringing money back into the CNS economy, and lots of available seats out of CNS with possible 1 stop connections to all of China Southern's international destinations. i.e. potential 1 stop CNS to LHR. Try doing that on QF or VA. Bit of a bummer for CX though - hopefully they can stay in CNS.

They have been running CNY flights for a few years, be interesting to see how they go!

Re: Jetstarisation of CNS Routes

Keep in mind the CX route is a triangulation through BNE... some days it goes HKG-CNS-BNE-HKG and other days HKG-BNE-CNS-HKG. I'd probably suggest the loads aren't fantastic on a pure CNS-HKG and HKG-CNS basis. They do well on their freight component out of CNS on these flights from what I understand. I've had friends using it to get to LHR and Europe, and I'd consider the same, especially with CX being a OW carrier.

Triangulation routes like this has been marketed to a few of the Chinese carriers. The government also announced an incentive a few years ago which offered to improve access to landing slots in major ports such as SYD, BNE and MEL if the airline first stopped via a secondary port, such as CNS. I don't remember the airlines jumping at the offer.

Many years ago, a proposal was made to EK for DXB-SIN-CNS-AKL... one attempt at getting a direct SIN-CNS route back and also increasing CNS-AKL services (this was when NZ was the only carrier on that route). Needless to say, it didn't get any wings to fly.

CZ have had Chinese New Year charters for a number of years and have excellent loads on those flights. I pretty sure CX also puts on a few additional charters.. and MU out of PVG get in on the act too. From what I understand, CAPL (Cairns Airport Pty Ltd) are certainly doing everything they can to lure the Chinese carriers.

Anyway... a bit off-topic...

Makes perfect sense. There are tons of Chinese tourists coming to Australia and Cairns and FNQ really needs the money right now.

Re: China Southern+Eastern To Cairns

Interesting as we near September that the CNS services are still not open for reservations!
