I am catching a Qantas flight from SYD to BKK, where I will board a Royal Jordanian flight from BKK to Europe via AMM. Multiple tickets.

Is is safer to check my bag all the way through, as they are both one world carriers or collect and check it through in BKK myself? I have an 8 hour layover in BKK, so plenty of time.

Royal Jordanian seems to have issues with losing bags. So I was concerned checking it through may add complications. Does RJ hold responsibility or QF (since they initially tag the bag). Notice on QF website to contact final airline for delayed luggage.

RJ are responsible if bags are lost.

Qantas *should* be able to tag them through, but might need you to insist. Really, I think that's the preferable solution as if you have to enter Jordan, there is a very high visa cost.

Thanks Mal, My lay over is in BKK...

Just realised I posted this in the wrong area...

Aah yes, BKK, not AMM! Slightly better :)

Note RJ check-in doesn't open there until a few hours before the flight (even the transfers desk isn't available until 3 or so hours before), so much better to get it sorted in Sydney. Qantas (unless they've recently changed their policy) should still be interlining oneWorld bags on seperate tickets, but make sure you have the itinerary with you showing the PNR and e-ticket number.

Note I've had bad luck recently with interlining - Hanoi-Bangkok-Amman-London (Qatar connecting to RJ) was badly tagged in Hanoi and it never made the transfer. Took three days to arrive to my address in London. Also have had BA refuse to through check bags for me.

Thanks for the tip on the checkin opening hours. It makes a difference!

Wonder what went wrong with the tagging in Hanoi? So it sounds re-checking it myself is no more safer than interlining it...

The Qatar staff in Hanoi put the wrong flight number on the bag (check your baggage receipt carefully), Transfer desk at BKK didn't deal with it properly and my bag ended up in a 'No idea what to do with this' pile.

Agghhh...was just on the phone with Royal Jordanian. They said I can't interline it with separate tickets but Qantas was fine with it. :-|:(!

Sometimes you need to take advice given to you by airline reservations people with a grain of salt as they often have no idea what their policies are and even less idea of what actually goes on at the airport.

What's the itinerary for your return flights?

If it's a similar scenario to going over I would see if there's anything on the RJ website you could print out that supports RJ connecting on to other OW carriers. Definitely know what your plan B is if the RJ 'computer says no'.

Thats true, you get conflicting advice from the airlines:/

It's actually a return flight. The initial outbound flights from Europe, I did a stop over in BKK as the layover was too short.

Did some searches on this, it seems like someone managed to transfer their baggage on multiple tickets with BA and RJ from Sydney. As Mal pointed out, the transfer desk does not open until 3 hrs prior. RJ does not do online boarding pass and other airlines doesn't seem to be able to print RJ's boarding pass. Apparently, I might be able to get though security in BKK with an e-ticket and returns to the transfer desk when it opens.

Still not sure if it's worth the risk as I have multiple flights to catch after Europe...my main concern is RJ losing my bags if the baggage interlining fail...

Strange, it supposed to be a OW wide rule/benefit now. Albeit not widely published because of several nuances:

FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - Oneworld connection protection on separate tickets

Anyway, you're starting with QF so that's good.

You should also get some missed connection protection once they're linked. Someone else here might be able to confirm if QF will/can issue your RJ boarding passes.

RJ is an amadeus carrier so this shouldn't be an issue.
