Apologies for this being my first post.

Stupidly I went and bought a Cosmolite 85cm only to realise there are size restrictions for checked baggage on both Virgin and Qantas domestic that this bag far exceeds.
Will it get rejected at the domestic check-in?

Should I just go back to theluggageprofessionals and exchange the bag?
I have cut off the tags but still have them - not sure if they'll do an exchange now......

Signed
An idiot.....

Yes you should, get the right size and you can't go wrong.

What's the bags actual dimensions? Just looking at the QF site, 158cm (which is 62in) is the max size, and yet you've said you've brought a 85cm bag (around 34in), which if my maths is correct it's about half the size of what you could take.

I strongly suspect that any commercially available travel bag will have been built with air travel in mind, and thus probably would not exceed these allowed dimensions without a specific label to state it was not suitable for air travel.

Thanks for the advice guys.

@ ashleyn - Will do. I have just spoken to The Luggage Professionals and they've kindly agreed to exchange the bag.

@ Sprucegoose - I'll look into these. Do you recommend any particular bags? I was originally looking at hard cases because I sometimes transport wine/whisky and liked the idea of the extra protection.

@ harvyk - Unfortunately it is too big. The 85cm Cosmolite's linear size is 179.5cm (versus limits at 140cm dom and 158cm int)

I'm flying Singapore Air for an upcoming international but need to get to Melb first via Virgin. It's this first domestic leg that worries me.

@ kiwitripper64 - Sorry, not sure what you're getting at... Yes have looked at both (now).

Dimensions of the Cosmolite 85cm (the name refers to the height only) are 85 + 59 + 35.5, for a total of 179.5cm.

So - strictly speaking - it exceeds the dimensions. The smaller Cosmolite (74cm height) does fit within the allowable dimensions.

Having said that, I doubt you would have a problem with the bigger bag, especially in these days of the bag drop.

I have an Antler Liquis, which comes in at 171cm, so that exceeds the max size also (though not by as much as the Cosmolite) and I have not had a problem, either domestic or internationally.

Peters of Kensington WAREHOUSE (open only on w/end) has Antler liquis for sale cheaper than at the main store. There is also an Aussie seller on ebay (Melbourne) that has the Antler bags as well.

I noticed this today too. Shopping for luggage and most of the large bags exceed QF and AA's 158cm, some by over 10cm. You'd think the stores would point this out - But then again, whats in it for them.

QF Domestic is even smaller at 140cm! I'm willing to bet a lot of people have no clue.

I'm normally one for following rules, but I ended up with one that's 163cm. Ssssh. :) Mathmatically, it's only 3.1% over, which is the same as having 23.7Kg instead of 23Kg. ;)

Do airlines actually enforce this for something that looks like a normal suitcase?

PS. I'll admit to being one of the people who never considered luggage size. I knew there were rules, i didn't think a normal suitcase would be outside them. I just checked my partners case that we took to Melbourne and it's over 160cm.

Never owned any luggage at all, always borrowed my mum's dinosaur Samsonite oyster. Currently deliberating between a 69cm or 75cm Samsonite Firelite for a 3 week trip.

Yes strange isn't it. Even the popular Antler Cyberlite is 82 x 50x 33 so 165cms or 7cms over the international limit.
The stores don't mention it when buying of course.

Ever seen the tape measure come out at checkin or are they more concerned with weight in these days of bag drop?

I've recently travelled with the cosmolite 85cm internationally with domestic transfers on QF to Japan. Not knowing that the actual luggage size was over the limit, I encountered no problems. Don't know whether I'm just lucky or not but no one ever questioned the size and dimension of my luggage.

I've never known it to be checked.

I even checked in a 2mx2m painting once all boxed up and an eye wasn't blinked.

included free delivery, australian made and ligtest on market

saw black and silver in strandbags, happy with the black, looks awesome
