Hi there!

Late last year I got on the Frequent Flyer board to ask questions about a holiday that me and my partner were wanting to take to the USA, using our FF points. Everyone chipped in and gave some amazing advice! Thank-you so much. We had a great time, the highlight being I popped the question to her, at the top of the Empire State Building - thankfully she said yes... phew!

Now, we are getting married next year and want to go from Melbourne to Koh Samui for two weeks for our "lazy, stay in one location which is warm" honeymoon. (Our last two holidays were VERY cold and we were busy, did a fair amount of travel! lol)

We get married on Saturday the 5th of May, and want to leave preferably on the 6th of May, or after if the deal is better and then return on the 20th or 21st of May.

Looking up on the Thai Air webiste, flights to Koh Samui via Bangkok are around the $1100 mark on those dates.

I was wondering if there is some strategy that we could play to get some decent tickets for cheap? If not, we are probably just going to book these. I was wondering if there any websites or offers around that could we could get a discount on the flights, or maybe if there might be a time where flights would be discounted etc.

We also want to avoid too many transfers/long layovers at Bangkok international.

If anyone would know, it would be you! :)

Thanks for reading, and again thank you for all the helpful suggestions last time - we were really blown away!

Thai airways tickets hit their cheapest exactly 3 weeks out, probably not what you want to do when hooking a honeymoon though...

My wife and I flew to Chiang Mai last year for our wedding anniversary, and we did it well by finding a good fare to Bangkok, then flew Air Asia to Chiang Mai. Fares to URT (the nearest airport as I recall) from BKK seems to start around $40AUD, and on some dates, less than half that!

I wasn't sure about Air Asia, not after flying them twice now, I've already booked more flights next year.

I love Thailand, have a wonderful time!

Thanks for that info - I had a feeling they would have a time when flights were discounted - I was hoping it would be something not so close!

Thanks! A great idea.

Yes - I forgot about Air Asia - perhaps we could get a discount MEL > BKK return flight and tack an Air Asia flight to Koh Samui.

I have flown them before too - they aren't bad!

I flew Bangkok airways last month and rate them highly over AA, they also fly HKT/KL/SIN-USM direct so you can skip BKK altogether and pick up a cheap deal to coughet, KL or SIN instead. What I really loved is they have catered airport lounges for all pax, regardless of class of ticket. They also were only marginally more expensive than AA when checked luggage and catering are included. Inflight service is nice as are their call centre staff if you need to make changes etc.

Last few times we've been to USM we've gone on Bangkok Airways from Singapore. Reasonably cheap once you get to SIN.

Another vote for Bangkok Airways from Singapore. Great service for such cheap fares, and basic lounge access for all.

Of my 2 trips to Samui (USM) I have flown Bangkok Air from coughet (HKT) and would not hesitate in doing so again. Sure you are packed into an ATR-72 Turbo Prop, but it adds to the charm if anything.

I believe FireFly also have options to fly from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to USM if you were able to get a cheap AAX fare from MEL-KUL, but I havent checked it out for about 12 months so I may be incorrect.

I have booked Bangkok Airways in combination with YASA SYD-BKK for next year, and my parent's are flying them BKK-USM-SIN to join us. Price wasn't too bad, only on the ATR one way

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for all the great suggestions!

I had a dig around Bangkok Air and Air Asia, and after crunching some numbers decided to go with flights via Thai Air to Koh Samui.

MEL > USM cost around $1100 each, including tax.
We get 20kg luggage (not that we'll be taking much, but we most likely will come back with stuff!)
We can change the booking if need be for $60.
There is a stopover at Bangkok, it's at its longest on the way back, something like 6 hours. That's nothing. :)The domestics have more flights to USM per day.

Looking into really cheap return air fares to Singapore, or Bangkok, then bolting on a domestic with either Bangkok Air or Air Asia, we could've saved some money, but not so much to make it compelling. I just didn't want the possible hassles involved changing airlines (lost luggage, running around finding the right terminal etc) ... my gut feeling told me to go with Bangkok Air the whole way. The goal is to have a terrific, stress free honeymoon after all!

Again, thanks. This board (and you) are the best!

Graeme.
