Chasing Status? Or not?

I am a NB but generally travel through J exclusively using points. I have just learnt about JASA from the sticky and just want to see if there are reasons why I should be chasing status as well? Because of family in HKG and routing, I tend to travel through CX internationally. Many thanks for your thoughts!

CX tend to look after QF status passengers very well, and if your already in Asia, there are some good SC runs with CX ;), you also get access to F lounges as a WP!

Also you get better availability of Award seats and as a WP you can even ask for an Award seat to be made available to you

A whole range of factors come into it... And whether you will use the benefits or could the money you spend chasing it just fund whatever trips you want...

I now and then wonder if i should try flying to get SC's and points, but then i rarely fly and when i do its almost all my own money so no use doing SC runs etc... I live in Perth so there are not First or even Business lounges really to use (not sure about the sunshine coast or where you fly??), when i travel i tend to take a big trip overseas and so tend to use which ever airlines are cheapest, although i have found a good way through work to get cheap access to the QP/AA/BA (which is probably the main benefit i would seek anyway)... Extra baggage allowance, priority boarding and all that stuff don't matter so much to me but might to others... And i would find it hard to attain anything more than silver which doesn't offer many benefits anyway...

At present I am finding it cheaper to get award flights which don't give any points or SCs, but most likely i would probably end up with half a dozen FF programs with minimal points in each of them...

But still mull it over now and then.... And everyone is different...

sorry to hijack the thread but care to share some of those Sc runs you are talking about?

i travel to Asia quite a bit so would be good to know.

Thanks guys for answering - in this case it is almost better to try to find the JASA or FASA fares until you qualify for the year, and then use classics award after once you get to WP. BNE-HKG is business only, and it will be nice to get into the first lounge without going through Sydney.

I refuse to fly from MCY as there is no Qantas service, and DJ hasn't got their business class on MCY routes. I much prefer to fly from BNE which gives me much better flight options, and never have to deal with the plane not able to land because of weather conditions as MCY doesn't have ILS. Twice I have to be bus from Brisbane.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

A couple of JASA's and a FASA and you are set for WP/OWE, I really enjoy the benefits it gives.

We tend to fly mostly J and F internationally, so status isn't that important to us. I don't actively chase status, but I enjoy it when we have it.

Some things which are good - if you are Gold (or Silver) you can choose your seats - and Gold gives you access to better seats. Being a control freak I like to do this, although Mr FM can't see the point.

Gold and above you can check in with a person rather than electronically and more important they take your baggage. I don't mind checking in electronically but my one experience with the baggage thing was pretty bad. Of course J gets you this as well, but many of the flights from CBR are Y only, so being able to hand your case to a person is a big plus for me.

If things go wrong i.e a flight cancelled they look after Status passengers first (most of the time anyway).

As someone who is on the cusp of becoming a QF Platinum (self funded), status becomes important if travelling in Y/Y+ and having that lounge access to relax before the flight rather than the zoo of the main terminal and gates.
Also the priority luggage is handy to have (works in most experiences of mine), in helping to give a quick getaway from the airport after arrival. As others have mentioned the ability to select your own seats at no cost is also a nice bonus.
All in all look at your future travels and decide if your travel planned for the next year is going to benefit from the status.

If you fly out from MCY on jetflex you will earn 20SC each way for MCY-SYD-MCY.......I've achieved WP status for the past three years doing this. Not that painful as it is only an 1.5 hour flight and IMO is far better than getting caught in traffic to & from BNE - I can pass the additional cost for the ticket on so it's a no brainer for me + parking is cheap as chips & I can be in my pool about 20 mins after landing.

I always smile when I'm sitting in the F lounge drinking - thinking how many others have secured their status while flying that pox of an airline JQ :):):)
