Hi there,
I've just booked flights from Manila to Toronto and have secured S class on my departing flight and N on my return flight.
I'm a one world platinum..... do I have any chance of an upgrade on either leg, or does this fare class preclude it ?

Fare class is often not taken into account, whats the loadings like?

If it's oversold in economy, you've got some chance, but Marco Polo Diamond and Gold members are ahead of you...

yes it does happen for OWEs (I have had several), be sure to check in online at T-48 to maximise your chances

both MNL-HKG and HKG-YVR are often oversold so I'd say you have a good shot

if you have asia miles also it may be worth asking at the airport in HKG if they will do an instant upgrade for you

try and get BN1! the higher your BIN/SEQ number the better your chances, that's for sure.

There is no rhyme or reason behind OpUp's (at least no algorithms which the airlines will share). From what I can tell status and fare class is only one small part in the overall tapestry (I've received an OpUp in the past on the cheapest of fares as a PS). I'd be going along to the airport full expecting to be flying in the class you booked.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

the collective experience suggests CX opups are in order of status, and if a tie break is required, by BIN number.

fare paid and fare class do not appear to be factors for CX upgrades.

In the old days when I had status with QF I was doing SYD-HKG-NRT and return and would occasionally get an op up to J.

I remember checkin once and the agent said we have an option for you A J seat with your Y special meal (gluten free) J and standard meal or remain in Y

Naturally I was happy to have a Y special meal in J which was nicely represented on J plates.

QF never offered this option.

Good advice from yohy. The early checkin part is very important with CX, get as close to SEQ 1 as possible.

Thanks for the advice all.... yes intend to agree that fare class doesn't count for much. We are currently in HK having booked O class both ways, when checking in at the cx counter in Manila I was told I had been bumped to premium economy and then at the gate, it was further upgraded to business.... Nice surprise. I hope the upgrade gods are similarly smiling at me for my Manila to Toronto flight next weekend.
