Has anyone had recent experience with carry on luggage only, travelling on QF in WhY?

Checked with QF and have been told that WP's get no extra allowance when travelling in whY; they should, but they don't! On my last few trips departing BNE, I have always been pulled up by the weight police. Luckily I have always been travelling J.

Any tips or advice? I really do not want to check any luggage. I intend to take a regulation size carry on bag and my crumpler messenger bag; well within the J limits. I am heading to Asia, so the overcoat with pockets full of stuff, is not really an option.

Wear your heavy shoes and pull out your coat and fill the pockets.
7kgs is the limit and it isn't per bag!
Once you get through security, you can repack and get it into the right bag.

Check luggage in?

(ducks and hides)

You can always try taking on a second small bag, worst case scenario they will ask you to check it in, but IME if you do go over the limit, but not by too much (number of bags limit, not weight limit) they usually don't care... Obviously don't take the kitchen sink, but a couple of clothing items that can be checked in if forced to would probably be ok... You may even be able to clip the two bags together to form "one" bag when required and "two" bags when weighed.

My recent experience is that the security guys have gone fascist in a bad way.
in a recent trip with my CL boss we were on really tight schedules so had to go with hand only. They judged him 1.5 kg over and sent him away.

He was traveling light with only one bag, it's BNE and warm so no jacket pockets to pack - he had no choice but to check in the bag.
The security people do not distinguish between premium and non- premium pax. Granted this is a first world problem, bit airline ground staff alignment would make everyone's life easier.

For int'l flights, I usually put everything from my pockets, everything metal (belt included just in case - don't want to increase my pat down chances), and any jumpers/jackets etc into the carry-on bag before heading through security, to save time at the checkpoint. When I have had it weighed, it is always usually ~10.5kg... they then usually ask if I have a computer in the bag. I have a Dell desktop-replacement laptop (weighs ~3kg with ~9hr battery life), so I always tell them that "I have a 3kg laptop, as well as my jacket(s), belt, jewellery, phone, wallet, iPod, watch, and everything else from my pockets - which I placed in the bag to avoid holding everyone up at the checkpoint, but can remove and carry them if you need to get a reading of <7kg." ... It's never been a problem, nor have any of them actually had the courage to ask me to do it (they must appreciate someone that is trying to make the job easier for their colleagues who are working on the x-ray) :)

I also find that if you walk up holding an Express card in an obvious way (when there are people not too far behind you as well), and walk like you're on a mission, they tend to just point you down the Express channel, and then stop the people that are following.

On another note, they seriously should consider raising the published limit to 10kg (which is offered on JQ?!)... 7kg is pittance when travelling with a decent laptop (and charger inc. the transformer box), toiletries, etc etc! :)

This problem has been happening at PER for sometime now, however it seems to have been eased somewhat in the last few months or so.

At BNE international, roll-aboard bags will always be weighed. However, my backpack has rarely been weighed. If I have both (backpack is my laptop bag) then all the heavy things go into the backpack or pockets until I am past the weight police, then empty pockets into carry-on bag at the screening point.

10 kg extra carryon vouchers for pax with no checkin luggage? But with restriction to stay within standard carryon sizes?

Hard for the airliines to win either way - where they dont enforce rules people gripe as the cabin is stuffed with cough, if they do enforce them they become ¨naz_s¨. I love to travel with carryon only, but fairs fair - there is a hold for a reason.

Thanks all for the advice and tips.

In the result, all good. Barely a glance as I passed through! Was under 7kgs too!

Remind not to fly ex-BNE then... My rollaboard generally tops 12KG (regulation size though) and has never been weighed at SYD. It was once weighed in MEL as they thought I was travelling in whY - when I convinced them I was travelling in J they still insisted on weighing it - saw it was 12KG and... did nothing...

I had no probs last week flying QF to Auckland for the BossReggie lunch, they didn't even give me or my rollaboard a passing glance.

They seem a bit keen on the pat down search as well at BNE. Can't think of a departure when I've not been pulled over for a grope.

I had my carry on weighed in bne and akl, as well as a pat down. I'm lucky I guess.

I got the pat down at BNE as well, seemed a bit of overkill and told him as much, he didn't appreciate the comment.
Next they'll be doing random strip searches if we don't watch out lol

I've had the random pat down at BNE as well... They almost seemed annoyed that they didn't find anything...

I wonder if this is pre customs security check or for the US only flights.
They'll be pre-Customs - the new security regulations are Australia's, not that of the USA, so they will be in use for all departing flights.

I wonder if these are part of the new arrangements "to make travel between Australia and the US easier". See

In reality it's a case of the US making foreign countries manage and pay for the security for inbound flights to the US. They have been doing "Pre-Clearance" work at Canadian airports for some time. I expect that before long there will be an extra step of US passport control at Australian airports, together with TSA style customer "friendliness". Then the contents of your carry on will have been in and out of the bag several times before you get to put it in the overhead locker.
