Carry-on Allowance on AA after QF flight (ex Australia)

What class are you flying on AA?

I flew F earlier this year and didn't have any problems with two carry on bags.

If you're in Y then you need to have priority boarding because regardless of what's allowed, there isn't much room left after the first couple of groups board.

When an AA flight is full (when aren't they) they will yell on repeat at the gate that one carry on and one 'personal item' such as laptop or hand bag is permitted, and anything else can be gate checked free of charge (which they strictly enforce for Y pax). A garment bag should be fine though. There's not much chance they'll query that. Just make sure you're at the gate ahead of boarding time (you don't mention if you're flying F or have QF status, but be sure to board as soon as you're allowed; overhead space is always at a premium when flying *any* US based airline).

Thanks guys

Forgot to mention that I'm a WP flying AA F after QF J ex-Oz (one INR).

Good to know that as AA rules specifies only one carry on even for its F pax.

Yes, they allow one 'personal item' as well but its definitions do not include a garment bag. That worried me and prompted the OP.

I feel better informed now.

Never had a problem with two pieces however that's mainly been in F domestically or J to/from Caribbean There are always several PA's made during the boarding process telling you to put your larger carry on item in the overhead bin with the smaller item underneath the seat in front of you.

It's always fascinating to watch the oversize items being put down the chute at the boarding gate to go in the hold. It's what we generally would call checked baggage here in Oz eg 20 kg suitcases.

It's even better to see off-duty crew shoving the same sized ones in the overheads (I saw one lass, probably around 5'3-4", manage to get a bag most likely bigger than she was in the overhead above my row 4 seat; shuffling it every which way and slamming it back in there). I'd say it was a result of bag charges being introduced, but it's more likely that people fly so much more often here, they simply take smaller bags (ie a full sized suit case is just too much).

As OBB said, you'll be fine in F. AA's treatment of WP's is excellent (You don't mention where you're travelling, but if heading out of or passing through LAX, DFW or JFK, be sure to pay the flagship lounges a visit; not as good as QF J lounges, but a much better step up from a regular Admirals Club).

Sure I will drop by the FL for a shower and a refresh post QF11 (and before QF12).

what they say and what they enforce in the USA are two totally different things.

When I was doing some domestic trips there I think people were loading the storage bin with bags similar size to what i'd checked in.

Also be sure to board in your Boarding Group. When I came across last week, the boarding pass showed Group 2 which gave me a good shot at getting my bags in.

Also, I notice that on the next flight my OW Ruby status (QF Silver) gave me Priority Access on the BP. This just means earlier access to the lockers.

Enjoy.

WP/OWE can board with First class and Exec Platinums; no need to wait for your group (and the OP is in F anyway ;)).

Even QF PS are ahead of Group 1. It's one of the best things as a QF Silver; flying AA gets you the wonderful "PRIORITY AACCESS" on your boarding pass:)

just in case you go looking for it... there is no flagship lounge in DFW :) (but there is one on ORD)

If you go to ORD, the FL is a little tricky to find as it is completely separate with a low-key entry, not an inner sanctum of the AC as in LAX and JFK. Check the location in the inflight magazine or ask at the AC - they will happily direct you.

Opposite gate K19

AA iPhone app shows all its terminals with locations of the AC (but not the separate FL @ ORD).

Peaceful, quiet, not much in terms of foods & drink.

It has a 'quiet' room for phone conversations.

It was on my 'run' this week so my memory is still fresh.

On the return from the LAX red-eye, it was closed at 6am but the WiFi still worked sitting outside the entrance.

In fact, I dropped in the AC first but once they saw the 'Emerald' on the BP, they actively invited me to go to the FL instead - some 100m away.

On the original post, I had no issue on AA with a carry-on and a garment bag (WP in F). Nobody even blinked !

Thanks

Good to know in case I keep looking for the FL later this week.

I had a bad connection there (DFW) last week, only 25 min between arrival and departure.

Running full speed from terminal D to C with me being the last to board!

Lucky the arrival gate was not too far from the connecting walkway. I could easily have missed the connection.

AA kept reassuring me 'it's OK'.

Even though you are in F and a WP be sure to get on in the first few.Plenty of overhead space above F seats but used by FAs and also Y pax who put their carry ons in the F bins on their way down the back.So even if in F and late to board there maybe no bin space left.

Also the last few flights at least half have boarded F pax first before AA EXP and OWE-because there are so many of them.

+1 to that advice

Saw quite a few Y pax jamming their carry-on in F lockers as they walked down the aisle.

Also saw plenty of late F pax looking for space too.

I'd advise our WP/OWE to start boarding the moment you see the wheelchairs moving i.e. even before any announcement (but after the wheelchairs are moved).

That's what I did and they had no qualm at all.
