Was on QF93 today and a very memorable moment.
Just leaving the coast above Sydney and Captain Dooley Ellis came on the PA and introduced himself. Started telling a quick story about a special passenger onboard. Next thing in South American (followed by English) he asked his now fiancé to marry him. I was in F cabin, very close to his fiancé and it was fantastic. He came out got down on one knee and put the ring on her finger.
Captain Ellis a true gentlemen and a great sense of humour. He did also mention he tried to get us into LA a bit earlier because he couldn't contain his excitement.
Great memorable flight.
Safe travels.

You mean Saturday's QF93 service. The aircraft arrived at a comparatively early 0626.

Did he dine with fiancé at her F seat?

If she said no?. Offload in HNL? For not following crew instructions?

Great occasion, but just as an aside, when I have been to South America, I have tried to speak a few halting words of either Spanish or Portugese as the natives don't quite know what to make of me if I speak 'South American.' (Their one word summation of me is 'gringo').

I hope that the plane had levelled out prior to the Captain making his lovely announcement. I am guessing that he is in his very late 40s or 50s (or older) to be occupying such a position with an airline on an A380, so let's hope all goes well.

He would be in a very small 'club' as I cannot imagine that many other Captains would have done this. Do our esteemed contributors who work in the industry know of others who have proposed on board an RPT aircraft? Are flight crew unofficially 'allowed' to do it (with the flight crew's assistance?)

Looks like she was never going to say 'no' as she wouldn't have then been on the flight. Perhaps she is Mexican or from elsewhere in Central America rather than a South American nation?

I hope the good Captain finds obtaining a spouse visa (if the lady doesn't already have one) not too difficult as I hear stories about it being a lengthy process, but that is digressing. If she is a US citizen, the process may be a bit easier and of course she's obviously already been to Melbourne, so she must have a visa of some sort.

While we wouldn't wish it on anybody, in the rare chance that she had suddenly said 'no', one can imagine that the proposer might hardly be in a state to operate a flight. But thankfully that isn't a likely turn of events.

One thing I forgot to ask: was her 'yes' repeated on the PA?

Great story! Not sure about the language 'South American' though!

Qantas have tweeted about it with a video.

Can't provide the link as I have less than 10 posts on this forum but check the @Qantas account on Twitter.

Don't you wish you'd learned Latin at school so you could speak with the people in Latin America? :p

On a serious note the video was just shown on the US Today. Congrats to all involved.

Just saw it on Facebook and I was wondering if a AFFer was on board.
