I'm seeking the wise counsel of the AFF membership with the following issue:

I need to cancel a flight booking I have made for a trip to LAX later this month. My understanding is that when I cancel the booking, the amount I have paid will convert to an online voucher that I can use for other travel in the next 12 months ( of equal or greater value) and that I will need to wear the cancellation fee specified for the booking.

The complication comes from the fact that part of the fare was paid using a travel voucher - an MPD Qantas sent me after an exploding sick bag incident on a flight last year.

The MPD voucher used actually expires in Jan 2013. So my question is will I lose the value of the MPD voucher from my online refund if I choose not to use it before Jan 2013 or I have I effectively extended the life of the MPD by including it in another booking.

I hope I have made myself clear here, I would be interested in other people's experience before I go ahead with the cancellation.

Thanks

IME, they issue you a new voucher, however the expiration date on the former voucher still applies (well for that part anyway). I have had several vouchers from QF, then cancelled and rebooked, and they have always reiterated this point.

Stuff the voucher issue, let's hear the story about the sick bag!
Reminds me of that Mr Bean episode...

Thanks Jock28, I will see if I can extricate the value of the original MPD voucher from the booking

Well since you ask...
Last December I was travelling to LHR via SIN with the family. We were seated in Y and a lady several rows in front of us was quite ill. Anyway she filled one of the Qantas sick bags to the brim. One of the FA's collected the bag and was gingerly carrying it up the aisle when the bag either disintegrated or they dropped it, not sure exactly what happened but it hit the deck and went everywhere!
I was sitting in the aisle and copped it on my jeans and shoes and I was by no means the worst affected.
To make matters worse we had just started our descent into SIN and everyone, including the FA's had to return to their seats for landing. So the cabin was left in a mess until we landed.
After landing blankets were thrown over the mess so that everybody could disembark. I was handed a pair of First Class PJ's and a medical waste bag for my shoes. The crew then passed me on to the SIN ground staff who were supposed to sort things out. In fact they did their best to avoid any responsibility.
Unfortunately we were continuing on to LHR on the same plane, in the same seats. I asked for us to be moved but apparently the plane was totally full.
Although the plane was cleaned at SIN the carpet was still wet and stunk of disinfectant.
Probably the worst flight I have ever experienced and I wrote to Qantas afterwards particularly complaining about the treatment by the SIN ground staff - hence the voucher
