Canada - new mobile phone?

Thanks for previous helpful advice re my son going to Canada to work for the ski season.
He's just arrived there and an unexpected situation arose - his phone broke.

Anyone with experience of getting a new phone in Canada? His trusty old phone (till now) is an LG G2, which I think he bought a couple of years ago or more here via the grey market and he has loved it.

Only advice I can proffer is that Canadians loath their telcos just as much as we do. If your son plans on going to the US a lot, watch out for call plans which charge lots to 'roam' in the US - you would have thought it was pretty much harmonised but apparently not.

Wonder if it might be best for him to get a very cheap phone & pre paid plan over there to tide him over and for you to get him a 'good' phone in Oz and send it over. Then warranties, plans etc are still Australian for when he comes back.
