Can I use Aegean points to upgrade on other Star Alliance airlines?

Hello -

I fly to China about 4 times a year - discount economy.

1. I think the best deal to get to *A gold is the Aegean program - 20,000 miles. Easier than Asiana (40,000 miles) and THAI (50,000 miles). Is that right? Any other suggestions?

2. Can I use my Aegean miles to upgrade on other *A airlines (TG, OZ and SG)? I looked on the Aegean Ts and Cs - it says "Members must make the redemption through the online management of their Miles&Bonus Account, by selecting «STAR ALLIANCE UPGRADE AWARD» from the right navigation list. The corresponding Award Miles are automatically deducted from the member's account." But I cannot find this «STAR ALLIANCE UPGRADE AWARD» link. The Aegean also says that upgrades are only for Aegean flights. Did something get lost in translation?

3. Can I transfer my TG points to Aegean? Or my Aegean points to TG?

Thanks for your reply. Maybe I should go with Asiana because I fly with them to ICN often. Can I transfer points from THAI Royal Orchid to Asiana FF or Aegean Miles and Bonus?

You can't transfer the points between the FF programs, however you should be able to use them for upgrades.

Just be aware that to use points for upgrades on international flights you need to pay full economy fare (Y), and with some airlines fare bucket 'S' is also upgradable.


BTW, a couple of benefits of the Asiana FF program is you have 2 years to qualify, then 2 years to retain compared to most others which are only one year to qualify and one to retain. Depending on your Asiana status, miles don't expire for at least 7 years; some other programs they expire at 3 years.

Its in their terms and conditions but not on the redemption page, I suspect its coming, point is probably mute anyway because you need to be in Y or B yet still spend half an award in points to get one, not much value.
