Hi, I just got a call from someone to check QF prices. I tried on expedia.com.au for MEL - LAX Apr 2 return Apr 15. The price for QF 93 and 94 is $1808

But after doing muti-destination and added LAX - LAS. The price went down to $1530..almost $300

Both are booked into O class.

Does this mean I can book the flights and cancel LAX-LAS later? Is there any risk involved?

Tried Sydney and gave the same result..a couple of hundred dollars saving. ie in March the flight cost $13xx but adding US domestic flight brought it down to $10xx

Personally, I would have no hesitation booking the cheaper flights mel-lax-mel/las-lax however I would not bother with cancelling the last las-lax sector. You are up with the ~$300 per ticket savings, so enjoy the discount whilst you are already ahead.

I think some airlines charge no show fee on discounted tickets? I saw it mentioned on one of the tickets I bought from CX. Not sure about AA.

Do read the fine print however in my experience no show fees often state the ticket is forfeitted. In some more flexible tickets I have booked no show fees mean a loss x% of the fare paid, so if you paid $1,000 for a flight and did not show, then you will forfeit x% of $1,000. Never have I seen one where a no show incurs an additional fee on top of what has been already paid.

I just had a quick look for my own reference re: CX and their lowest two Y fares state "No Show Charge = No Refund" ..... thus it means to me the fare is forfeitted. However the more flexbile Y fares says " No Show Charge = No Penalty" but subject to their respective cancellation fees. So do a no show, pay the cancellation fee only and get the fare balance refunded.
