Does anyone have any idea how many calories are in airline meals? E.g. the cardboard boxes you get on a QF domestic hop

It is strange that they don't publish them (like fast-food places given the general consistency of the meals).

Never any calories in the alcohol either

This is something Japanese Airlines do... both ANA and JL publish the calorie count for all their main courses. I've seen one or two other minor airlines do it as well, but it's not common. Dunno why. Should be something easy to do.

I've always suspected they load up the food with salt and sugar to make it taste OK at altitude, hence why they don't.

But it does make it a bit challenging to maintain the diet on the road.

Talking about airline food, the cheese platter on the Au - NZ flight with EK, now that one is waste, I tried it once, 3 large choice of cheese, including the blue vein one, and only 3 small round crackers to go with it...
Will be sad to see the EK Au - NZ flights stop, (except SYD - CHC and vv) of course.
Now that is the well feeding airline.
Not to mention the pre take off breakfast in the EK lounge!

The portion sizes are quite small. I think they are the standard 300-400 calorie meals.

Interesting topic. I must admit it’s something I’ve never really been bothered about.
I try to maintain a relatively strict diet when not travelling so that I can relax and enjoy what’s offered to me in the air.

Well yes, but the meals served on DomY esp from Adelaide leave much to be desired. On the rare time I think I will indulge it’s usually a bite and then it’s left. And we do seem to get a lot of snack type things like cake and cookies onboard even at meal times. And we all know those aren’t good.
