Hi travellers,
Has anyone has flown Air Malaysia via KL to Kota Kinabalu? We arrive ex Bne to KL and have a 7 hour wait onto KK. Not sure what is available with regards to transit hotels or lounges. I am assuming we will need to clear immigration in KL although KK is an international airport ? As Air Malaysia is a Qantas partner airline, does my QF Airport lounge membership & status count in Malaysia ? Thanks in advance for feedback.

No lounge access unless you have elite FF status I am afraid. There is a transit hotel that should do the job.

Thanks Markis. Which side of immigration is the transit hotel ? There used to be a hotel at the old airport on the other side of the road from the terminal, but no idea about the new airport.

I have found out that arriving and departing Terminal M so there is not need to clear customs and immigration in KL. Luggage will be booked through from Brisbane to KK. We will also have access to Air Malaysia business lounge in Terminal M.

Terminal M means main terminal and includes Domestic and International, you will need to clear customs as there are no International flights to KK from KUL. Lounge access is available if your in J only.

Couple of things.
1. It's Malaysia Airlines, not Air Malaysia
2. Yes, you will need to clear immigration.
3. You took the longer route. The 2 x quicker routes were:

Option 1
BNE-PER-BKI
VA 5.30pm-8.55pm then MH 12.40am-6.20am

Option 2
BNE-MEL-BWN-BKI
VA 7.55am-11.15am then BI 1.25pm-5.25pm then MH 9.30pm-10.10am

You will do immigration in both places. Kuala Lumpur for entry into Malaysia, and Kota Kinabalu for entry into Sabah.
