"Brazen thieves strike on SIA flight

Two Chinese nationals are alleged to have attempted to rob passengers on a Singapore Airlines from Jakarta to Singapore.

While other passengers on the SIA flight were watching videos or sleeping on Sunday, two men were helping themselves to valuables in carry-on bags.

According to the Straits Times, the pair rifled through the bags that had been stowed in overhead cabins looking for valuables.

In one case, they found US$5,000 in a laptop bag.

An alert crew member caught the duo in the act of stealing and by the time the flight landed at Changi Airport, police were waiting to make arrests.

The newspaper said several such thefts have happened in the last month. Police reports have been made, and airlines and their crew alerted to this."

Does this occur much? Does one have to be on the alert all the time?

Who the heck carries $5k cash??!

When working at the airport I escorted the mother of a king of an African country to her 6 pre-ordered taxis. When we got to the taxi her assistant opened his briefcase to give me a tip and I saw the contents of the briefcase was just filled with cash

Not often, but it pays to keep your valuables on you, and if you do notice someone going through the lockers do jump up and confirm nothing has been taken.
I have only once had my suspicions about a fellow pax, as a result after they had been looking through the overhead lockers I jumped up and confirmed nothing was taken (which it wasn't).
That said everything important (eg money and passport) was on my person.

Dang, I was the wrong type of student!!

Probably not*, I was thinking of the students on border patrol who always get caught on the greater than $10k question when coming to Australiabecause they have a heap of cash to pay their uni fees. I always think that a well meaning family member has told them "don't tell anyone you have this much cash, or they'll rob you".

* no doubt you would have also had uni fees to pay, as I did and all other uni students do. Well maybe being a fee paying student is the wrong type.

There was an incident back in 2000 on a Philippine Airlines domestic flight where the passengers were all robbed mid flight & the robber then exited the aircraft with a hand-made parachute..!

The body was later recovered in a swamp - sans valuables :-|
