My wife and I are intending to travel to Boracay next year. Our son will be a year old - how will he fare in the transfers between MNL international and domestic, and then the flight to MPH? I've read in other threads on AFF that it's about a twenty minute taxi ride for the transfer... are there any trains so that we don't need to worry about baby capsules?

It's not the taxi ride I would be worried about. It's the speedboat ride to Boracay lol. There is a terminal bus at MNL but I highly recommend using a taxi. Have fun!

In all seriousness, as long as you have a decent connection time it will be fine to go there with a baby. My cousin did so with a 1 yo just fine.

What airline are you travelling on? If the transfers are between different terminals in MNL as I suspect, then simply use a taxi.
It would be the most convenient option.

Just be sure you are flying into Caticlan and not Kalibo...

edit: re-read post properly and see you are flying into Caticlan...:)

Also if you first time to Philippines then I would have your hotel in Boracay organise all the pickups/transfers/fees for transfer from Caticlan Airport to the island, it is relatively straightforward, but little chaotic the first time purchasing appropriate tickets/permits, esp with baby in tow.

Agreed.. Best to organise beforehand.
It is much more pleasant to be met & escorted to your accommodation if it's your first time visit.

Yeah, we're staying at the Shangri-La and they've asked for our travel details so that they can sort out the rest.

For flights we're thinking about QF19 / QF20, unfortunately QF19 lands pretty late at night and I think we'd need to overnight before flying onwards. Unless there's a better connection time? Origin would be ADL.

What about SQ? I'm not familiar ex-Adelaide, but plenty of timing options ex Perth.

edit: jsut checked schedules, and looks like you're going to have to overnight somewhere. Singapore, KL or Manila.

Oh, and not too shabby digs either!

Nice choice!
You will be very happy in Boracay..:D
Let them know (Shang) your flight arrival times. they have an exclusive airport M&G service & speedboat to the resort.
Let me know if you require any other assistance.
Cheers.

Was at the Shangri La earlier this year. One of my fav short getaway spots. You will love it :)

By the way, have you considered flying SYD - HKG then HKG - CEB - MPH. You will have to stay the night in HKG unless you want to brave the late night CX138 or you can book the trip so you can stay the night in Cebu, where there is also a nice Shangri La about 10-15 mins away from the airport. I find it much nicer to do the trip this way and it avoids the zoo of MNL airport.

If we want to fly QF it looks as though we might need to overnight in MNL on the way there. Can anyone recommend a baby-friendly hotel that's near the airport?

Remington
Marriott
Maxims
Sofitel

To name a few.

These are near the T3 & T1 terminals in Manila.
Which airline did you book for MNL/MPH ?

Given the recent events in Cebu you may want to avoid for a little while.

We were caught right in the middle of the Typhoon and we were amazed at the lack of procedures and or information available at hotels to clients advising what to do when it would hit and how to stay safe.

The place its self is fabulous BUT do not buy any food from local vendors as most of it is washed in local water which is not the best. Best to eat at the Hotel and or very westernised venues that use bottled clean water.

Haven't booked anything at this stage. Most likely PAL.

Ok.. Have a look at the hotels I mentioned.
I use both PAL & Cebu Pacific for domestic in Philippines, as IME both have about the same standards & delay ratio. ;)
Cheers,

although I was a bit confused, matrix is saying that to get from MNL to MPH I need to go via ICN and CEB? As much as I like my bul go gi, it's a bit of a detour...

You may just observe how parts of Boracay have become gangnam centric, hence the defaulted 'detour".

Have you considered using PR (PAL) ex either DRW, MEL or SYD? Better service than QF.

Sometimes ex SYD they use the Boeing 777-300ER, all of which are less than four years old (they now have six, but two are required for the MNL - LHR route) but the ex MEL flights are typically A330s ( a recent appearance, but old planes) or A343s.

I suggest using VA to connect and trying to link the two separately purchased PNRs.

They fly ex MEL on Wed, Fri, Sun and ex SYD on the four other days. The flights ex MNL are overnight on the 'previous' night i.e. Tue, Thu and Sat nights ex MNL for MEL; to SYD on the other nights.

Or you could fly to DRW with VA or QF and connect to PR's three days a week flight (that originates in BNE) mid-afternoon ex DRW. This is always an A320. The online fares ex DRW can be quite cheap.

A good travel agent for PR is North Suburban Travel in Brunswick, Melbourne - 03 9384 1844. You will need to overnight in MNL before flying to MPH as latter does not accommodate night flights.

We flew ADL-xHKG-PEK, PEK-XIY vv in the last couple of weeks, baby survived admirably. All the crew seemed to love him and he occasionally let us sleep. Fingers crossed he's as well behaved in a few months.

This went off without a hitch - Shangri-La transfers were perfect, typhoon Neoguri kept its distance, and our friends had the beach wedding they wanted.

The only issues were the L3s! Our son hated the vans.

We went ADL-xSYD-MNL, MNL-MPH vv. I was a bit unhappy QF took our pram MNL-SYD, we were able to take it as carry-on everywhere else.

I also got a CSM greeting way back in row 46! Very surprising.
