So it looks like that Virgin America are having an 80% bonus sale until 4 April: https://www.virginamerica.com/cms/elevate-frequent-flyer/promotions/bonus-points

I'm tempted to buy a tranche of points so I can take a few business class trips out of Sydney later in the year. However, does anyone know whether there are limited seats on VA flights for Elevate customers?

A few other websites suggest that whatever shows up in your standard VA search is bookable via VX, but this seems overly optimistic. Great if true (there's a wide selection of flights available through the VA site so I'd be spoiled for choice), but I'd rather play it conservatively in case there's only limited numbers of reward seats free.
