how do i search for availability - and do I need to transfer velocity points into my Singaporeair account before I can book?

thanks in advance

I haven't done so, but from what I've read, you get better value and use less points if converting your VA points into KrisFlyer.
Theres a good article just released this week by Aus BT, comparing the VA vs QF flyer points and it talks about converting points.

I have transferred points whilst on the phone to SQ and with my VA membership open. That way I was instantaneously able to transfer the almost exact amount within seconds.

Check the "Use Points + Pay" box when searching the flight on the VA website.

I recently used my Velocity points to redeem a J class seat on a SIN-CGK flight but didn't even think of converting the points first. Doing a comparison now:
Velocity = 22,700 points
KrisFlyer (Saver) = 17,500 miles equivalent to 23,625 Velocity points
KrisFlyer (Standard) = 35,000 miles equivalent to 47,250 Velocity points

I've never used KrisFlyer so please correct me if I'm wrong. I also haven't factored in the 15% discount for online redemptions above.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

thank you for the great replies- actually, i checked online this afternoon and to my amazement, a J (business) flight using velocity from singapore to melbourne showed 80000 + $78 per seat - is that the standard costing for J seats using velocity?

Muppet501st's right. That's VA's redemption rate, but transferring to KF first will save you 16,888 VFF points (but cost more in taxes).

Via VA: 80,000 VFF points + $78
Via SQ: 63,112 VFF points + $280.11 (46,750 SQ miles)

Interesting that the redemption is actually lower via VA for SIN-CGK, AIRwin. I thought it was always cheaper (points wise) to convert to KF first?

You can find the award you want with SQ, and then do a transfer from VA which will happen immediately. It's really very easy. As get me outta here said, you can also do it over the phone, but keep in mind you won't get the 15% saving which is included in the numbers I quote above.

You would get the 15% off if there is a reason that you cannot do it on line and just politely point that.
