Doing some research on kayak.com I noticed some websites (mytrip.com) offer slightly discounted tickets for the flight I was interested in (roughly 2% less) as compared to the same flight on qantas.com

Is there any difference in how Qantas treats those bookings? Am I still getting all the same miles/status points for the flight or is there anything I would be missing out on unless booked directly with Qantas?

The big difference is if you have any issues or want to change flights ect. You have to go through the agent and QF will refuse to deal with you.

What are the credt card fees and charges on Kayak? You could do a test booking and go all the way to the payment screen to double check the final cost. If you book through qantas.com you can avoid the international AUD30.00 credit card fee by purchasing a gift voucher eg for AUD50.00 for each person that will be on the booking. The voucher booking reference will then become your booking number for your flights. You need to allow a few hours for the voucher to issue before it's ready to be redeemed.

So Qantas won't charge the booking fee if you use voucher for part of the payment?

That's neat, It didn't occur to me to do that and I usually just BPAY for tickets (which means no extra points for CC payments). Thanks for the tip.

I would try STA travel as well - you don't need to be a student, and sometimes their fares are couple of hundred dollars cheaper than any other site - for the exact same flights! (cheaper even than the Qantas website)

The other things is that you can always ask Qantas to do a price match guarantee. Qantas will match the price found on any australian website, and give you some bonus frequent flyer points. i think the price guarantee only applies if you make the claim the same day you book - so book early in the day rather than late at night! (full details of the price match, which excludes Qantas' hefty credit card fees, are available on the QF website)

Mel, sorry if this is a silly question, but when you say Qantas does price matches, I assume that is only for QF-coded flights? IE if I can get a flight that is on QF metal, cheaper via a codeshare, then Qantas won't match that with a QF-coded flight?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Everything must match:

  • Same dates of travel
  • Same booking and cancellation conditions
  • Same fare type with the same conditions
  • Same routes
  • Same Qantas flight numbers in the case of flights (only itineraries where all flights have a QF flight number qualify)
  • Qantas flights must be on an itinerary with the first flight originating in Australia
  • Prices on a website marketed to consumers located in Australia that is operated by a company with an active ABN or ACN
