I was hoping some of the more experienced can help me out. Next year in mid April I'm moving to North America with my wife and little one (who will be ~16 months old), and I've been looking at flights from Perth to either SFO (preferred) or LAX. My wife is keen on us breaking up the trip where possible since this will be the first long haul flights with the baby. Given that you don't get a stopover with a Saver award, we're looking at booking two separate awards to either SIN or HKG (preferred) (but will also look at NRT and ICN when my dates come up).

When looking for some dummy PER-HKG flights, the only options that show up at the 0110 departure. If I can see availability, is it possible to book other flights PER-SIN-HKG via phone, as long as the layover is less than 24 hours? If I do it this way, has anyone had any success with getting the agent to provide the 15% discount given the flights don't show up on the search engine?

Ideally I'd book the early afternoon departure (~1420) PER-SIN and then take the 1300 SIN-HKG the following day on the one award. The afternoon flights are also on the refitted 772 which appears to have better seats than the A333 (can anyone comment on these two hard products?)

Any suggestions or advice would be welcome.

A couple of suggestions if not too late.

Some agents will offer stopovers on the one way saver for +10,000 miles. Suggest calling the KF call centre and be armed with your gold standard itinerary. See if they can do that for you with the exact flights you need.

Fall back 1. Be flexible with days eitehr side of your preferred dates. Maybe consider an extra day in SIN if needed.

HKG stopover is not going to be so easy with SQ. Their hub is out of Singapore. So NRT or ICN would be more likely to have some flexibility.

While Saver awards are always preferred, check your figures on adding the two Saver fares together. You might find that a Standard redemption might be similarly costed and give you the exact stopover and flight options.

Thanks Alby. When my dates come up I'll try my luck on the phone. I've got plenty of flexibility since we'e travelling around the west coast of the US/Canada for 8-10 weeks prior to starting work in Vancouver :)

I did look at 2 x Saver vs Standard fares and it's still cheaper to do the Savers. Adding in a stop over, one of the cheapest options is actually Hong Kong since PER-SIN is the same miles as PER-HKG; and then by some quirk HKG-SFO is only 6375 more miles to go in F rather than J. Availability will be the issue...

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Only other thing to add to my last comment is that whilst Singapore F to SFO would be great, taking an infant comes with a significant extra expense compared with J for buying the fare.

hound - have sent you a pm - talk to Crystal and tell her I gave you her contact number - if anybody can swing it she will.
