If you are all on the same ticket it can be used for everyone.

so I booked the tickets, there is according to there booking site all 8 seats in J available, so rang thru and they said yep there were seats but its too far away to give complimentary upgrades (the flights are the last flight of the day Christmas eve 24/12/12) she said if they sell them that's unfortunate but I cant get the upgrade until 2 weeks before, never used the complimentary upgrades before, so does this sound right!?

I was under the impression for Plat's that if there was availability then the upgrades are guaranteed. You may want to call and speak to a different agent.

That does sound odd. Normally upgrades such as that are limited by controls such as releasing a few at a time (i.e the seats available on the revenue booking site may not equal the amount of free upgrade/point seats left).

In saying that, is it a case of where you need the availability of a certain fare class, not the total amount of seats left?

Granted, but does there need to be availability in a certain fare class before you can use them?

Sorry.

I knew what I meant. I was agreeing with you but from experience and from talking to the Velocity team there should be availability that far ahead.

No problems. The only issue I can see is if for some reason, they have restricted the availability for that bucket for that day.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It's very frustrating that, while usually friendly, the DJ premium team staff are fairly incompetent and know little of their product.

The latest one I had... I called to book a points upgrade and checked loads before hand. Award seats available and there were actually 8 business seats available for sale online (so, in other words, it was empty). Agent initially said "sorry, there are no upgrade seats available". When I remarked that the cabin appeared to be basically empty, it suddenly became "oh, it has just opened up". I'm fairly sure someone wasn't looking in the right place to begin with

I had the same issue a couple of weeks back, called to upgrade (with the half points deal) also for a flight on Christmas Day, Op said it was to early, when I questioned her, explained that the lead time had never been an issue before she looked again and said yes there was availability, and upgraded.
While as everyone says they are friendly and generally helpful on the Plat desk, some seem to lack a bit of product knowledge. but guess that's not really an different to all service centres......

tried again, said no comp up seats available on flight, all comp up seats have been already booked, i said "wrong" there are all the 8 J seats are still unsold, ie. no one is in business class as at now as a paid fare or a comp up, nil / nada / zip!!! and she said sorry all sold out... grrrrr

Which flight are you on? Did you look on Expert Flyer?

You have 4 comp upgrades. Depending on the tickets this could translate to 4 upgrades on 2 separate flights (equals 8, as you say) - but usually only 4. But the key is having the appropriate inventory available, just because there are 'available' or 'empty' seats in business does not necessarily mean they are available to use for the comp upgrades. It may be too late in this instance, but when wanting to use comp upgrades I always make the booking online up until the last step then ring the velocity number and ask if the upgrades are available on those flights and can they process them for me on the spot. If they say yes, I then 'pull the trigger' on the booking (while the agent is still on the phone), give them the reference number and they process the upgrades.
