What a great article! I've read plenty of history books on the Jumbo, but an actual period piece does it great justice. Interesting that the predictions of its impact were spot on - it really did revolutionize air travel for the masses, like nothing before or since.

Aside: For a real laugh, check the out the last page and the snippet on '40 years in the future' (i.e. now). Kinda got the web thing ('home screen'), but most schooling today is still done in real classrooms and not via TV. Of course, some may argue that the principal education kids get *is* via the google box, but that's another thread...

Thanks for the link opusman!

I didn't know the 747 was the first aircraft with the overhead luggage storage. I think I will have to do some research into how accurate Boeing's projection of revenue seat miles for 1975 was, and what that figure is today!

Going a little ot...I think they got the 40 yr projection for college just right. I watch/listen to all my lectures on-line and only attend once a week for tutorials. Get/submit assignments on-line, undertake tests on-line. It's great to get the chance to study and fit it around work.

Great article.

The look into the future is interesting and partly accurate. It would be nice to see 747s in the sky and at airports for many years to come....
