On our upcoming trip it will be Mr Mella's birthday while we are in Singapore. (Lucky him! Last year he had it in Italy). We have never been to SIN.

I have brought Universal Studios tickets for that date as he really wanted to go, but I'm searching for other ideas to make his birthday special either in Singapore or Sentosa Island.

Accommodation so far is one night at Conrad, with the other 2 up in the air due to the Hilton points changes (not sure worth spending all 3 nights at the Conrad or checking out and doing 2 nights elsewhere)

Suggestions appreciated

Thanks KitKat. Is it Asian cuisine? We're a little turned off asian food since our trip to Thailand!

At Universal Studios, the line up for the popular rides were massive when we went, which was a normal weekday. For an extra $30, the express pass was well worth it. Saved hours lining up, and got through all the major rides. Without the passes, we would have been lucky to get through half of them. You can get the express passes on the day at any ticket booth inside once you've had a chance to see how busy it is.

Also, both the chilli and salt and pepper mud crabs at Jumbo Seafood (scattered throughout the island) are highly recommended

One thing I have found is that Asia as a rule generally does a bad job with Western Food, I am a firm believer in eating local where you can and Singapore with its health regulations make that a safe choice.

Since its a special occasion, the haker centre can wait, try:

Andre – very refined, uses artisanal produce, only has 30 seats, some say the best on offer.

Cocotte – 48-hour marinated roast chicken served on a wooden platter, carcass and all is the house speciality.Breakfast does seem to be popular with reviewers.

Waku Ghin – Tetsuya Wakuda’s Tassie abalone, sea urchin with caviar and melt-in-the-mouth wagyu cooked in front of you and served with fresh wasabi grated on a dried sharks’ fin! Again a very small number of seats.

I second Waku Ghin. Favourite restaurant - food is divine and the service is superb. 10 course degustation - mainly seafood. The sea urchin, as mentioned by markis10, is sublime!

Thanks Cabbage, got tickets the other day and did buy the express pass which in past experience in those places is always highly worth it.

Anyone eaten at Guy Savoy or Cut by Wolfgang Puck???

Markis: I know I should be eating the countries food, but after the Thailand experience we have been turned off Asian food for the time being, and this part of the trip will be at the end of 5 weeks in Europe and Mr Mella will want something similar my guess is. :)

If you like steak & are OK with chains, Morton's of Chicago at the Mandarin Oriental is good.

I can highly recommend the Orang Utan breakfast at the Zoo. Plus make sure you do all the "extra" things at the Zoo, like feeding the elephants and pictures with all sorts of animals. CHeck out the zoo website...there is a whole range of extras. The Night Safari is good too. Plus the River Safari should be open now...but I havent been there yet.

Of the other classic thing to do is High Tea in the Tiffin Room at the Raffles Hotel. It's an experience which everyone should do in Singapore. Sure there are better high tea's around, but you still gotta do it .

Late to the thread as we've just returned from SIN.

I'm sure you'll like SIN however, an aversion to Asian cuisine may dampened one of the real joys of visiting.

FWIW I'm in the middle of posting a TR on our trip & amongst other things can recommend the Fullerton Bay Hotel - I've just posted the FBH section & have heaps of photos here http://www.australianfrequentflyer....eek-sin-two-hotels-free-49071.html#post798487

The TR is quite heavy on local food however, we did go to a terrific Mario Batali restaurant - Osteria Pizzeria Mozza Osteria Pizzeria Mozza MBS by Mario Batali | ladyironchef: Food & Travel

We went with the pizza option (two restaurants within the one) & they were terrific......if we were staying one more night we would have eaten at Osteria as it looked very good.
