Hi everyone,

We're in Vegas for 2 nights July 17th 09. Currently, its a toss-up on where to stay between the MGM and the sister hotel, the TI (old Treasure Island). Both offer good value, from a distance( (never been to Vegas before).

I've already discounted the Luxor, Golden Nugget, New York, Mandalay and the Stratosphere as either too dirty, too exxy, too far from the Strip etc etc (TripAdvisor being my bible).

Have you a suggestion? Couple, no kids, not big gamblers, want to stay central to the Strip, like the nightlife (love to boogie, on the disco...ummm, yeah), budget of US$100+ per night, have 4-6 other friends staying in Vegas same time but different places (pre-Honeymoon).

cheers

I have stayed at the Luxor on the last few visits. It's accross the road from the MGM and was $49 walk up price. (New York and Mandaley Bay are also walking distance)

Golden Nugget might be too dirty, all the others would be fine, the Stratosphere is not in the group with NY, MGM, Excalbur, Luxor, but is walkerable or use the mono rail from the MGM via the Hilton.

Luxor does me.

July is driving season, probably puts the price up as well.

It appears you are staying on a Fri and Sat nights when the prices skyrocket, compared to say regular weekday rates.

I have previously stayed at the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Paris Las Vegas which I think is as central as you could get on the strip. Other hotels very central include The Bellagio, Ceasers Palace and a few lesser known name hotels that I can't recall right now.

In terms of walking The Strip from start to finish - I'd guess it could take around 45minutes so if you have a central hotel (as above) you could walk anywhere, anytime and within 20 minutes.

As with the MGM, I think there is the MGM Apartment/Towers which are very nice and is highly rated but the location is a bit too south Strip for my liking ie means I walk ages to get to say Wynn's or the Venetian etc in the north Strip.

Stayed at TI last month for a few nights. Was very happy with the choice, rooms are newly refurbished, we paid around 75USD per night that included Sat/Sun nights. Its towards the southern end of the strip whereas the MGM is the northern probably a good 30 min walk with all the nonsence that goes on on the strip. i would recomend it and would probably stay there again, have stayed in Paris,NY NY, Luxor and Hilton - the TI offered the best all round value in my opinion.

MGM would be a good choice as a couple, with friends and into nightlife. Tabu and Studio54 are at the MGM, and you're close to LAX nightclub at Luxor and Pure at Caesar's Palace. There's also a great pool complex where you can chillax during the hot Vegas days. I think MGM have 2 and 3 bedroom apartments too, could be an option if your friends haven't booked yet.

Tho I haven't stayed at TI before, it felt very family oriented to me - maybe it's just the nightly pirate ship shows that do that. Bellagio could be another option for you too, nice and central and it's got the neat water-dance shows out front.

It's hard to have a bad time in Vegas tho, where ever you stay. Live it up! I am jealous.

It really does depend on what rate you get.We are usually driving so can always try for the walk up rate.Have stayed at Luxor,Mandalay and New york this century. The $25 per night for New york just couldnt be turned down.I enjoyed them all.
I discount TA hotel reviews unless you are looking for the cheapest stay possible. However if they say a hotel is cheap and nasty it must be bad.If they complain about cost-to me it means little.

Speaking of Cirque Du Soleil, l just went to the Perth show tonight (awsome, recommend it, Darlion - you guessed it, asian theme) and saw an ad that says there are 6 Cirque Du Soleil at once going on in Vegas. Crazy

Cirque du Soleil - Las Vegas

Yes CDS is Awesome!! I've seen 'Love' and 'Mystere' in Vegas, as well as 'Varakei' and 'Dralion' in Sydney where we had front row seats - amazing colours and acts! And seeing facial expressions - priceless!

I would not rely on a walk up rate on a Friday or saturday night even in these times of financial stress, I would book something now so you lock in the rate. The rates are vary by 10X between the weekend and non convention weekdays and this has an effect on people experience, I once got a (now defunct) Stardust suite for $25 a night including vochers for three buffet meals each day on a Monday!

Hi Candyflip,
This site may help, Reviews of vacations, hotels, resorts, vacation and travel packages - TripAdvisor

There is a forum @ Flyertalk which is dedicated to Vegas and various perks and lurks with the place. Good reading.

I was in Vegas in Nov - before the real crisis set in... and although rates were dropping when I was set to go, I stuck with Bill's Gambling hall's hotel. (Fairly dodgy hotel, but right in the centre of the strip)

I don't really recommend it unless you are on a budget though!

Since then, I have received so many offers from various hotels I don't know what to book for the next time I'm there! Every week I have a new enchanting deal from yet another hotel (Note I signed up onto the mailing list of many hotel chains and hotels before I stayed to get a good price).

Vegas is suffering. Ask any gaming attendant what he/she thinks, or ask a local, and they will tell you just how much the place is suffering.

Still, it's good for us tourists as hotels that normally refuse to discount have started discounting.

For those that were following this thread (and gave advice, thank you) we ended up booking the MGM Grand on a sweet deal:

Daily access to the Grand Buffet for 2 people (3 square a day, we believe, gratis)
2 VIP Passes to Studio 54 or Tabu
2 complimentary MGM Grand poolside coughtails
25% off Grand Spa or Christoph Salon (add 20% standard service/gratuity charge though!)
$20 Free Slot Play
$25 upgrade per night to Bungalow Suite (from US$127 on our nights)
$30 upgrade per night to Celebrity Spa Suite (all gone on our nights in July)

So our rooms cost US$127 each night (July 17/18), with all the above included. Very happy.

good travelling all :)

Yep, that MGM Grand deal with the daily grand buffet for two people is the best deal going around. However from my reading you only get one sitting i.e. Lunch one day, dinner the next. If it's all day buffet then I'm going to come back looking like an American.

After snagging the $930 flights MEL-JFK we're going to Vegas May 10-15th in the MGM Grand Tower for 5 nights for a total of US$306 which works out to about $87 aussie dollars a night including the buffet! Now I just gotta find somewhere cheaper for the weekend elsewhere on the strip for two nights, then sort out 2 weeks in New York.

As far as I am aware Priceline does not accept Australian issued credit cards with an Australian address. Don't know how you would go using an Australian issued credit card with a US address....
