Hi all,

I'm fairly new to VFF. I have just hit gold status.

What are the best value redemptions for velocity? Or best use for velocity points?

I did a quick search but could not find a thread about this topic (sorry if this has been discussed before)

Ideally looking at long-haul J redemptions or open to any suggestions.

Im based in Sydney.

Cheers,
leyy

To make it worthwhile, you might want to transfer points to SQ KF, and add to them by flying SQ.
I have flown SQ J a long time ago, when AN was still around, and wow, much worth it.
This was about the mid 1990s, about 1996, and SQ's ratings are around the top.
If you want to go to LAX, then try to get VA1, or if you want to go to LHR, then go with VA up to AUH, then keep on going with VR, but other than these 2, if wanting to go to other places, ***I would say convert your VR points to KF (if enough), or if not, keep flying them (SQ), collecting SQ KF miles, and then go see the world.***
VR SG gives lounge access to SK (edit to correct error) lounge, which is good, but still, being able to sit in SQ J is better than anything else.
SQ has the Airbus380s, while VA only has Boeing777s.

VA points are good for expensive domestic tickets (close in / school holidays). Plentiful J to the USA non-stop. Transcontinental Australia if you will be on the new A330. Etihad J Europe-Australia. Not sure what the burn rate is like on South African PER-JNB in J?

Whilst not part of a network availability in long haul J on EY is OK and to the U.S on VA is still fine, but not as good as it used to be. I would only recommend transferring velocity points to SQ for availability reasons, seats available when you require to where you want to go, or if you love SQ that much (which is possible) that you don't wish to fly on EY or VA.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

IMO, the best use of velocity points are AUS- USA in premium cabins especially as far as availability is concern. Also, intra Asia with Silk Air coz those flights can be very pricey, transatlantic with Virgin Atlantic or Delta (if you can get any seats) and transcontinental premium cabin with Virgin America.

Completely depends on the route and your circumstances. I will "buy" at up to about 2c per point (as a credit card surcharge etc). Redemption / "sell" I look to achieve more than that. Considering you can get revenue J direct to LAX from Australian east coast for around $5k if you wait for the right special, and J redemptions are between 80 to 95k points on VFF, you will achieve a nominal >5c per point on that redemption. BUT you need availability and your own estimate of the value of the J seat to really decide.
