I'm planning to travel to New York City next year using a J award flight and I have the option of EK (A380) via Dubai or CX (A330/777) via Hong Kong. The seat/bed is the most important factor on this route for me. I have flown CX J to NYC before and was impressed with the seat, but was interested to see how the EK A380 seat compares, and on a lesser note the food/amenities

Personally I rate EK better. J on the A380 it is much more private and easier to lie flat and sleep. While based on limited experience to compare, I'd rate EK's food slightly better. Amenities win too, plus there's the bar (and chance of an F upgrade, with shower).

Is the CX herringbone style? I would choose that over the Emirates J. The herringbone style esp Window is extremely comfortable, flat and private. I've been on both in last 6 months and while an F upgrade on EK would be nice it is by no means anywhere a given.

I've had CX J window seats on the 777 - much more private than say QF's 380 product, but still quite exposed and less insulated from cabin lights / noise / neighbours than EK window seat, in my opinion. But EK can feel very boxed in and service can be hit and miss (though my EK J experiences have always been good).

I haven't looked it up but what are the cost and time comparisons between EK via DXB and CX via HKG?

Unfortunately I don't have the equivalent on CX but there was much more privacy than the large numbers of J pax on the 380.

Dont get me wrong - I really like Emirates, a lot, but if I wanted a sleep I would choose CX if a herringbone.

Number of people in cabin and through traffic is a good point.

I prefer CX J. If using Qantas points the CX award fees will be significantly cheaper (though slightly more points).

CX for me ... but have a Emirates J in 3 weeks ...but the CX product is hard to beat :)

As do I. From Adelaide to Dubai but on 777 so angled seat. Still, a classic reward seat for 2 so not complaining. And an upgrade would be nice. :p

Thanks for the replies, my concern with the EK seat is the seat looks fairly narrow compared to the CX seat. Also as said previously the taxes/fees on EK were about $300 more than CX
