I have been given instructions to buy a Laptop. I will be in HKG Airport and Taipei, is there any significant advantage in buying from these places? (It will be donated to an Asian institution, so not required in Aus, but will require windows in English)

I seek the wisdom of the crowd!!

Unless you want a high end laptop for gaming or 3D modelling, etc, I would just buy them locally. They are so cheap these days.

Just today someone posted on OzBargain some pretty good laptop deals (e.g. Toshiba Core i5 15.6" Laptop with 1GB graphics for $499). That's easily MORE than good enough for most types of users. See here: Weekend Clearance - Toshiba i5 Laptop with 1GB Video - $499 | Samsung 512GB SSD - $395 Delivered - OzBargain

TPE vs HKG, TPE would be cheaper in terms of retail prices

Certainly if CX J fares are any indicator of the relative currency valuations between TWD and HKD!

Do you have any particular shop that you would recommend in Taipei?

depends on the brand. For example HP is cheaper in Hong Kong than Singapore but its the other way around when dealing with Asus.

Most laptop companies have websites which will show Rrp in various countries. Good as a guide.

Note that dell is fairly similarly prices in most Asian cities.

Taipei has three main computer shopping malls:

Nova at Taipei Station -4 floors www.nova.com.tw
K Mall just next to the big department store Mitzukoshi opposite the Taipei Train Station
Kuang Hua Market Also known as Guanghwa, this area is accessible via the Metro blue line. Get off at the Zhongxiao Xinsheng station and walk north toward Civic Boulevard.

Wouldn't have thought there'd be a lot of price difference these days, especially if local service becomes a factor

Not a tremendous price variation nowadays between cities, though certainly more variety in TPE, HKG, TYO, SIN.

Thanks, good tip. Will check it out, we are staying near Taipei Station.

My Sony Z series in HK was better speced and $1000 cheaper than could be purchased in Australia... declared at Customs and told to keep walking :)
Tablet and dock keyboard nothing "currently" beats Asus Inifinty.... Android
Laptop\netbook Asus has the "extra" features Z830 now up to Z940 or something....that Windows.

Very timely post! :). I will be in Hong Kong in 10 days and I'm interested in getting the ASUS Infinity Transformer as a Xmas gift for my wife. Any suggestion of a good place to buy that in HK? Fortress? the airport?

Well I actually got family one in JBHIFI in QLD via price matched OW 64GB with dock for $704 in September......then went TRS out of Brisbane to get it for $634 all up!
So if you can beat that go for it.

Sorry don't have suggestions for buying in H.K.....please post for future reference.

Thanks! I saw it advertised for HK$5,498 at Fortress in HK. So maybe not that big of a deal... I will take a look anyway while I'm there.

dell.com.au and go to the Dell Outlet section. Always find great bargains there though you have to keep going back to look/check.
Collect your GST rebate at the airport and that makes it even cheaper!

We brought 2 in HKG from one of their chain stores similar to JB Hifi..can't remember the name, but they were everywhere. Came with warranty...5 years later both still going strong and have had no problems whatsoever...and the price at the time was much much cheaper than oz for the same models.

In hkg would be fortress or Broadway. Have bought laptops from both before... both are good to deal with. A local does help increase the discount but still great value.
