This year because of a new job I have been taking a few flights. Coupled with holidays etc Silver is now tantalisingly close - I got the double status points now until October to get me there letter (thanks Qantas). Question is, do I spend a few dollars on a status run?

Reasons for doing this are - I want to get a reward flight next year before QFF goes toes up and I lose all my points. Seems to be very difficult to get a decent award flight (Classic Award, not Any) on the route and dates I want (Syd - Lhr July/August 2013) and my next option is to buy a Y seats and hope to jag an upgrade.

Question #2 is - does Silver get me a better chomp at the award seat or upgrade pies? I probably need to take 2 flights to make silver and will do it if it means I can achieve either of these goals. I can't see me making Silver any other time so this is my best chance to get it.
But, if there is no real benefit of awards or upgrades then I'll stay on the ground.

What do I do?

You will theoretically get better access to award flights, and be marginally higher up the pecking order for upgrades.
You will get a free Qantas Club entry pass.
You can use the business class check in.
You will also get 50% bonus FF points while silver.

Whether this is worth it or not is up to you :) If you really are that close I'd say go for it if you can do it fairly cheaply. Remember the requalifying level is less than the initial qualifying level so you may find it easier to retain silver in subsequent years.

It's the 'theoretically' bit that worries me. Am already QP so no extra fun there. Just want to make sure the upgrade benefit is worth it first.

although, SYD-ADL is only $3-400 and that will get me over the line so may have to spend a Saturday on a plane.

Do you have many points, a well thought out run using points on a JASA will get you Gold quite cheaply, which will mean you get QP for free, and a nice points bonus everytime you fly!

Considering 280SC can be earned by spending 24000 points when you on double, Gold s not far away.

Im 90 SC short of gold for the first time so very keen to hear how 140SC (without the double SC offer) can be achieved for 24000 points (which, coincidentally, is precisely my balance).

I have the 24,000 points (actually have 300,000) so that deal is very attractive. Please do tell, either in open or PM. If I can do it in a day or two (saving holidays for actual holidays) I am al for it.

In your case, Sydney Townsville will get 120 SC for 24000, or position to Townsville then fly to Darwin via Brisbane to get the 140.

Markis is that 24,000 one way? Best I am seeing is 37,000 one way

Yes, its one way and you can reduce the points down by making a cash payment, for instance this little trip will net 480 SC for 48000 points + cash

And dont forget you also earn points 7500 points and also possibly a loyalty bonus as well once you click over 500 SC, that is another 5000, so 48000 points becomes more like 35000 points cost!

Markis: That does sound very attractive to reach Gold status. I have around 120k+ points, if I do this twice within the year can I jump from Bronze to Gold straight away?

Only if you have the double SC offer, otherwise it's 240.

I'm thinking I won't get to Gold so will be happy with Silver, especially if it is at that pricing. SWMBO is off to Perth next week, may have to trundle over and spend a night before she comes back. That will be a stony cab ride home, me up the front and her squashed in up the back.

120k of points will get you from zero to SG regardless of the double offer or not, two return TSV--DRW trips will earn 560 for an outlay of 96000, which earns 5000 loyalty bonus and 24000 normal points, leaving you enough for a STD- TSV return JASA that earns another 200 for the remaining 48000.
