Bankwest Transaction account [General Discussion]

Sorry, if I missed this earlier - but how long are people waiting to see the QF points post? I'm a brand new customer, I opened the account Jul 16th with a $2K deposit, have made 15 transactions > $2 but have yet to see points post...Should I be chasing them up?

Thanks
Points are paid when you get your monthly statement. Since you haven't yet had an account open for a month, I'd not be worrying just yet.

I opened my account in the back half of June and did some transactions in June (6 in fact) and received 30 points early July. i've also received points early August for July transactions and holding points (I parked some money in there for a while). When I login to the BW portal however, I still have not had a statement issued for the account yet.

I opened mine on 21 June, met the requirements, and still waiting. I’d expect a full 2 statements before they appear.

That’s more or less when I opened mine, too. I received the statement late July for opening the account late June. Did you log on to BankWest, and click on ‘estatements’ on the left side?

Yes I did, I also have a Bankwest credit card with eStatements viewable including the one just issued a few days ago. Selecting on the Transaction account, I get the following message.

There are no eStatements to show for this account
  • New accounts - we will notify you when a new statement is available for viewing
  • Accounts with statements older than 5 years - please contact us if you require a statement. Fees may apply

I'm pretty sure that (from memory) the T+Cs say that the bonus points will be awarded 60 days after the qualifying purchases are made. So you have at least another month or so to wait.

I also opened my account in late June. I've made transactions in both June and July and have received two lots of monthly points. Like GSP, I still have not received notification of an e-statement. And there are no e-statements available in the BankWest portal.

I think if you don't make a lot of transactions you don't get monthly statements. I've made about 20 in both my and my partner's account and no statement for either after a month and a half.

Also got a really weird amount of points posted in the first month. More than 5 per transaction and not in multiples of 5 either!

July set up for me, received one lot of monthly points, and have not received an eStatement either

Don’t forget you earn QFF points on your balance as well

Statements are issues quarterly, unless you are doing a lot of transactions and you will get them earlier. There is a monthly sweep of points.

The bonus points I would suspect show up once you have qualified for them in line with whatever they say in the T&Cs.

So just to clarify, all you need is 10 purchases that's $2 or more to qualify for the 10k points right? Only got 60 points so far from BankWest and is getting a bit paranoid.

Yes. But remember some transactions are excluded.

Might be good for getting your account closed!

That might be true, but I don't believe it's reasonable for Bankwest to argue abuse when all the account holder has done was doing the minimum to meet the spend requirement, wouldn't you agree that's similar to a credit card company closing your account and withhold the bonus points for just spending the minimum amount to get the bonus points and no more?

I would definitely take it to FOS if Bankwest goes down this path and I hope many others will as well.

I don't agree with the analogy.

The terms of the agreement are very much in Bankwest's favour. They can shut down your account if they suspect abuse. Abuse is NOT defined. I'd think Bankwest would have a problem with one transaction at one merchant being split 10 times when there appears no reason that the payment could not have been made in 1 transaction. 10 x $2 over 10 days is a different matter.

Yes I tend to agree here. From what I read the issue Bankwest have is obtaining points by the method of accumulating 5 points per transactions, not meeting the minimum requirements, although would be interested if somebody says that is not the case.

The issue will be (if they decide to act) the time between each transaction, and/or whether it really was only one transaction that was split. Just splitting payments on the one card they now regard as "gaming".

Bankwest may well regard it as gaming if it believes that the transactions could have been only one transaction.

ie If you have just used the split-payment function it will be hard to argue with this. Ditto if it was multiple small transaction over a very small point in time. Forum reports are that while Bankwest let this slide to a huge extent last time around, that they are actively cracking down on such practices, this time around

If you have spread it over hours or days then you have an argument that they were actually separate spend and not split spend. If you did it all at once then I doubt that would succeed if challenged.

As you did not have a large number of transactions you may well be ok.

I know that in one Amex promo that not bill-spliiting etc allowed me to keep 2.9 million MR points, whereas others who splitting bills etc lost their points, including one mate who I know lost 2 million points as Amex indication it was abuse which the general terms of the card covered. Amex initially suspended me too and sent me a letter stating that they thought my account may have indulged in abuse, but they had to re-instate me after I wrote back justifying my spend as all being valid and reasonable (ie My David Jones spend).
