Hello fellow travellers. HELP required. Our family is flying Thai Airways to Nepal in October. On the way back I thought I'd stop at Bangkok and duck down to Krabi for a week. I was hoping to use Air Asia, however I notice they fly out of DMK and I land at BKK at 1800hrs. How's the easiest way to get there? Will I need to stay in Bangkok for the night? Or is it best to fly with an airline that goes directly from BKK to Krabi?
Thanks Bitten

Looking at GoogleMaps it will take about an hour to drive from one to the other.

If it were me, I would stay a night in BKK and see a little of the city before taking a flight the next day.

Are you flying on or after 25 October? If so, Bangkok Airways has a 2025 departure from BKK for around AUD51. Air Asia is about half that price, but you'd have to overnight and of course transfer airports.

Before 25 october, Bangkok Airways is the same price, but the last flight out is 1725. Still, you can get airport accommodation close to the airport for about AUD40 a night (reasonable 2.5-3 star, including round-trip transfers).

I'd say bangkok airways, from BKK, is a better option than Air Asia for Don Mueang. The former is full service, including basic lounge access for all passengers (including those in economy with no status).

Bangkok airways is great. Never tried the DMK transfer, maybe JohnK can help.

Definitely agree about Bangkok Airways. Use them a fair bit. Airfares cheap. Service fantastic. You are able to change non-changeable airfares for ~800 baht.

I haven't used the transfer bus yet from BKK-DMK but I hear it is quite good.

One other thing to consider is by joining PG FlyerBonus you get 30kg luggage allowance as well as lounge access.

It's such a shame Nok Air ditched their 'business' class... that, along with Air Aisa's 'Red Carpet Service' is about the most fun I've ever had on a plane!!

Sorry for late respose MEL_Traveller. Great advice. Decided to go up to Chiang Mai instead of Krabi. I'll look at the Bangkok Airways option for that. Do you know how long I should allow for transfers from an International flight landing at 1825hrs- to get to a domestic flight in time?

Thanks JohnK. Not quite familiar with what PG FlyerBonus is- but it sounds worth it. Can you give me more info please

I don't think there's much choice... Bangkok Airways only has two flights around that time... a 1900 and 2105. The 1900 you won't make, so I'd go the 2015. Fares seem to be around the AUD70 mark one way.

(After 25 October the schedule is slightly revised, with departures at 1935 and 2115. The 1935 isn't really an option there either.)

FlyerBonus is their frequent flyer program. You can link to it from their website.

If your bags are checked through then you don't need that much time to transfer. I did it a few weeks ago in <30 minutes from arrival gate to PG Boutique lounge.

Your biggest worry would be incoming delays. Booking the last PG flight of the night BKK-CNX would be the safest option.

If you have some Japan airlines miles or SPG (to transfer to JMB), you can book return on Bangkok airways for a mere 5000 pts. Check availability with ExpertFlyer...

Along similar lines to the OP, I'm scheduled to arrive at BKK on SQ next Saturday at 8.35am on a flight from SIN (overnight at SIN transit hotel) and need to get to Krabi.

Options include:

1. 9.25am BKK to KBV direct on Banglok airways, A$125

2. 11.40am DMK to KBV direct on AirAsia, A$73, or $112 flexible.

3. 10.00 or 10.10am BKK to KBV via USM on Bankok airways, A$286 (arrives 20 min later than option 2)

4. 1.15pm BKK to KBV direct on TG, A$177

5. 1.50pm DMK to KBV direct on AirAsia, A$65

6. 2.15pm BKK to KBV direct on Bangkok airways, A$125

7. 2.25pm DMK to KBV direct on AirAsia, A$56

My order of priority:

1. Earliest arrival;
2. Lowest price;
3. Least waiting;
4. Shortest flight time.

The above flights are in order of my first priority.

From what I've gleaned from the Internet, option 1 is too tight, so leaning towards option 2. I've read varying opinions on this being fine or too tight, given transfer from BKK to DMK. I'm not averse to cutting it fine, as I hate waiting (third priority). Transfer options seem to be:

1. free shuttle bus. This can take 45m - 2 hrs depending on traffic - Saturday morning I suspect (hope) it will be shorter;

2. Train - takes 45m - 1hr, costs about 150THB (A$6). Likely to be more reliable than shuttle.

3. Taxi. Likely to be more expensive than train and same traffic issue as shuttle.

I also looked at flying direct from SIN on star (SQ ticket is flexible, so may be able to change at nominal cost), but seemed to be expensive - almost S$200.

Thoughts on flight and transfer options would've appreciated.

Hmmm - I like the non-stop from SIN! Will make life so much easier. Costing you about $120 more than the Air Asia from DMK... but cutting out hours of slugging through BKK, immigration lines, collecting bags, out into the heat to get bus/train/taxi, check-in, waiting around, flight etc etc.

Travelling between those airports is always a risky proposition if you have limited time. To avoid stress I'd recommend the direct route.

This is probably your best option

1.50pm DMK to KBV direct on AirAsia, A$65

The 11:40am is too tight. Think the express train still out so take the lesuirerly free transfer bus from BKK to DMK and you should have plenty of time.
