I was just quoted $471.00 ONE WAY from Melbourne to the Gold Coast for a starter fare with no check in bags!!!!!! Their fares to coughet, Ho Chi Min and Bali are cheaper. I seriously thought they were kidding me. Qantas was cheaper too. It was for 9.50am Sat 27th June. Had I been able to go a week earlier the fare would be $69.00.
What a rip off! I will go via Brisbane.

You can always invoke the price beat guarantee with VA?

Buyer beware. What you fail to mention is that there are flights as cheap as $199 on that day as well.

They wont get me there on time though. I have never seen flights so expensive on Jetstar especially as the same time of day on Qantas with luggage etc was cheaper. That was the part that got me .

There is a 1010am VA735 service for around $205, even cheaper 1 stop options on QF and VA or TigerAir if you feel like price beating but why would you bother? For half the price I'd be happy flying either QF or VA.

What happens when you try to price beat a 1 stop competitor vs the expensive direct JQ flight? Do they try to weasel out of the Price Beat?

Can only price beat for same flight sectors. They won't price beat a non stop against a one stop service.

It's all in the T&C. I looked into it last year to see if JQ would price beat against MH on SIN-MEL. The reason I wanted to do it is the reason they don't - to avoid a longer journey with transit.

I have to have direct ( don't like take off so always book direct flights) Can't see me using Tiger with hubby as no lounge access so i'll either use Virgin or Qantas. I was just stunned at the price for a " Low cost" airline with no check in luggage. Maybe I have been spoiled with booking in advance and getting good Qantas deals but I thought it was very expensive.

That is expensive, I would agree. But there are alternatives to get around the price... fly a different airline, fly at a different time or as others have mentioned see if you can do a price beat.

But a week earlier is not the first day of school holidays.

If you're willing to fly Jetstar anyway I'd take tiger if it saved a few hundred bucks. How much value is there in a lounge visit at 9am? I'd say 20 bucks max personally.

Oops kids are grown up so have no idea when school holidays start and end any more. Poor families having to fork out more than 500% increase than the previous week just because its school holidays.

I honestly don't think i'll get my husband to fly Tiger where in Melbourne you check in at a shed lol. He prefers Qantas but as there are no direct flights Melb to Gold Coast he was ok to fly Jetstar. He is a WP lol. We will just go via Brisbane and rent a car. I like to fly Qantas because of the safety record being a very nervous flyer.

To me it's not about the 500% increase, the price simply says the flights full (possibly oversold), and if someone really wants to travel on that particular flight they'll just have to pay a lot of money. Classic law of supply and demand. Nothing more. Nothing less. If they had lots of seats to sell still they wouldn't be charging $471. And for sure not everyone has paid that amount for that flight, the early bookers would have paid much less.

I am not sure you quite get it, your options would seem to be:

1. Fly Qantas but have to change planes in SYD (much cheaper than Jetstar)
2. Fly Virgin Australia direct (again - cheaper than Jetstar and no stop in SYD)
3. Use price beat to beat the direct Virgin VA735 and fly Jetstar direct (for about half the price of what Jetstar are asking now)
4. Fly Tigerair direct (for much less than all of the above, and its uncertain at this stage whether the new Tigerair/Jetstar terminal will be open by June 27)
5. Fly to BNE and get caught in school holiday traffic in Brisbane and the Gold Coast plus cost and time of hiring a car + driving.
6. Pay full price and take the Jetstar flight you described.
7. Find a different time or day and fly to the Gold Coast which may be less expensive with any airline.

I assume you already have flights back to MEL booked, and this is why you are looking at one way fares?

Supply and demand . Obviously the flight is close to sold out. Its a business not a charity

They don't have to fork out that premium if they choose one of the many cheaper flights that day (there are a number of flights less than half the price you want to fly on).

I like to fly Qantas because of the safety record being a very nervous flyer.

I cant remember the last time there was a major incident in australia on any of the airlines. Your chances of being involved in an accident are greatly increased as soon as you hire the car and DRIVE. As others have said fly someone other than JQ or use price match. You said the other flights dont get you there in time, how long have you factored in for the drive from bris to the GC? if its an hour I can tell you that wont be enough. On school holidays on a saturday it can take over 2 hours. If there is a serious accident in the wrong spot it can close the highway for hours

What's your fuss really???? Jetstar believes they can sell it at that price and you can choose whether or not to accept that fare price. Nobody, and I mean nobody including Jetstar is forcing you to buy these $471 tickets.

I wouldn't say fuss is the correct word. maureeng quite correctly was shocked at the fare and posted it for the benefit of all. I'm shocked as well........there is another option....buy VA business for a similar price and have lounge and in air service! plus the all important points + SCs (just kidding!).

And I disagree. I believe it is a big fuss (over nothing because prices are based supply/demand and it appears Jetstar knows their seats are limited, so thus can charge whatever they want on this particular flight; also don't like the price, then fly on another flight/carrier). Now, let me fuss more about the 500% increase figure that families will not have to fork out for this flight over the same flight the previous week - and if 500% is not a big enough fuss and doesn't emphasis my point, it is a rip-off!!! Anyway I digress, I will now fly Qantas.
