Apple Watch Boarding Passes

Hi all,

I have recently bought an apple watch just to try it out (2 week return policy) I have discovered that you can have boarding passes on the watch.. Has anyone tried this and been successful with it? Or is it just a waste of time and faster to use phone/paper i'm going to try it with my upcoming flight in two days but I don't want to seem like an absolute idiot at the lounge and gate holding out a watch.

Whats the AFF community's thoughts on this? Waste of time or convenient

(For those who haven't seen this here is an old pass that I still had on my phone and it synced across, you scroll down so it is a process to get the the QR code)

I have used mine to get into the VA lounge and at boarding gate and again as I entered the aircraft. A bit of a novelty but it works efficiently.

Do you have to take your watch off your arm to scan it?. I heard in the early days there wasn't enough room under the scanning device for you to wear the watch while scanning

Don't VA have the hand scanners?

The Apple watches don't fit under the QF scanners which were around before the watch was invented however you can still checkin with your watch but scan your freq flyer card to board.

I've only seen one person in the last 12 months try to board using an Apple watch so assumed it was just another fad people had grown out of.

Thanks OBB, I don't fly VA so don't know how they scan. It was QF that I heard that they don't fit under the scan machine. I must admit I don't use my watch for check in or boarding but I do use my card rather than paper

I've used my Apple Watch for entering Air NZ lounges and for boarding Air NZ flights. Never had an issue and it is a novelty thing.

Ill be sure to try it once for the novelty effect then probably get annoyed with it and go back to paper passes

I keep meaning to try it, but keep forgetting! Because the boarding pass on the phone appears on your lock screen, I find it's actually easier to reach and open with one swipe.

Do the staff still insist on reading the text on the pass on your watch before letting you scan it? I've been stopped a few times from scanning my phone because they want to see the text on it first. I imagine it would be more annoying with a watch, where scrolling would be required.

If you take the watch off, I expect that will go into secure mode and not work.

I use Applepay on the watch all the time. In the beginning I thought it might be a novelty, but it has become my main way of paying for anything. Moved business from two banks that weren't offering it.

Why do you say that Sam? The whole idea is so that you can use it without restriction, but someone else can't get value from stealing it.

I tried it the other day on a flight from Brisbane to Melbourne. Worked to get into the lounge, the lounge staff at the kerbside entrance had not seen it before. Tried to use it at the gate. The problem is with the apple watch when you face your wrist away from you the screen goes off and the scanner at the gate was horizontal facing up so when I turned my wrist the screen goes off and wouldn't scan. A bit of a hold up behind me and the attendant was like you'll have to get your ID out and print out the pass, so I took the watch off then it scanned fine... Probably won't use it again unless there is a hand scanner or a scanner that scans from above

I used this at PER no problem back in December, however it required twisting my hand into a quite uncomfortable position to get it to work. Suffice to say, since then I have gone back to using the 'Wallet' on my phone!
