I will be having to head to Amsterdam for work (own small business) in November and will be using Points for the ticket and looking at using points + pay to make it happen. How late would you leave it to book the ticket? I am trying to get a few more points before I book to save some $$$.

I don't think you can redeem your QF points for an ASA seat on EK flights...

No, but you can do a points plus pay which books into revenue class, if you have 1000000+ points spare that is

Probably cheaper to pay for a connection from DXB or LHR and just use an any seat award to those places, using more points versus paying cash does not make sense unless your points rich, as the conversion costs mean your getting cheap points. Sooner the better for ASAs!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks I was considering the LHR option as I have done that in the past. I used to be Silver status and it was much easier when I had more points but times aren't easy in my industry.

Would it be cheaper to fly SYD-KUL-AMS on MH?

Yeah looking at that as an option. In the past I have flown with Qantas each time as I was usually Qantas Club which comes in handy with over 10kg of catalogues etc that I pick up at the trade show.

ARGH! The MH site is down just when I need it... I flew on MH recently and I think baggage allowance is now 30 kg for Economy class?

Thanks! I just did the same thing. Will keep an eye on that one and look at it.

Seems the Qantas ASA booking system is a little borked. I did a dummy ASA for the OP with weird results. I chose SYD - AMS return in November (12th to the 25th) with no results with the "no fare for the requested itinerary"blah blah. I then chose March next year and it spits back results no problem with plenty of options on QF, EK, and QF/EK. Around 260k return and few dollars or 96k points plus around 1600 bucks. Umm not really worth it but...I then change the dates back to Nov2013 to my originals of the 12th to the 25th and the system gives back good results this time. Mostly EK code shares with Qantas with the odd Emirates or true Qantas metal flight in there. Pricing was around 220k plus some dollars or 96000 points and 1100 bucks. Not too bad. Tried this a few times and all good. I had to review the price in the first March booking otherwise is wont allow for the date change to November. Weird but I can certainly replicate this easily, though the website is spitting 'unavailable' errors back now and then.

What sort of event in Amsterdam.

Short 3 day show or something longer.

Good thing with traveling in November the airfares were usually fairly cheap even when you booked 2 weeks out, but I am generally paying, because if I have to go anywhere for work if I can't forward to go then I am not going to go. Points are good if you need a one way positioning filght, I flew LHR-NRT last year in BA First and it was 126,000 points well spent.

haha was waiting for that. Short show but the best in the world for the Marine Industry METSTRADE | Home

I am lucky I have friends I can stay with in Frankfurt before hand so may do that to make the most of it. Good thing the trains are cheap and good.

I've had all sorts of weird things appearing when searching hence asking. Glad I'm not alone!

What's your small business?

If you use points you can't really get a tax deduction can you, as opposed to paying for a cash fare?

Take a look at KLM/AF fares, you can fly via Asia on QF metal and code (points and status earn) then connect to a direct AMS AF service.

This is for buying a fare, which I would be doing for the tax deduction as others suggest! :)

You assume we don't run at a loss currently?

we may have won a lot of medals at the recent Olympics and I'm proud to be a sponsor of the team however times are tough in our industry. I used to head overseas a lot. Not anymore.

Fair point. You can carry it forward against your future good years though :)

You might also consider an award seat to LHR then a classic into AMS? That would probably be a truckload of points required though.
