I see Ausbt have created an online community now - I have had a quick browse this morning an notice many familiar names - how many more "communities" do we need?

Between the facebook groups and AFF, I have more than enough to satisfy this little termites appetite!

anyway - if interested... Community - Australian Business Traveller

Too much ??

We'll have to see how it goes I guess. There are a few discussion threads that aren't getting accurate advice, or a slow in finally providing accurate advice. This is where the administrators of the site should be spending some time - at least initially - to intervene with the right information. 'Credibility' is an important issue... if you can't deliver people will go elsewhere.

Surprisingly the ozbargain forums are pretty accurate - and have the traffic to deliver some good results in real time.

The dates on a lot of the threads suggest the community has existed for some months.

I would imagine with 12,000+ members, they re-used previous registered members from the comments section on the bottom of articles.

Looks pretty clean and easy to use, but I already have a home ;)

Maybe AFF will introduce a loyalty scheme :)

The ABT 'Community' is just their old Q&A section better organised and with a new skin. Hence why it already has a number of posts
(And yes I've posted on that, and FT, MiP/IF).

Theoretically audience should be a little different although there is obvious overlap.

Haven't you seen the Silver/Gold memberships? :p

Then again, I haven't seen you in the lounge, so maybe not ;)

Does Milepoint still exist or did it get rebranded, I never quite worked that out and was never that tuned in there anyway?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Still there. I went and had a look at it today. I think the last post on the QF forum was months ago. And there's part of the problem for a new forum... if you don't have continuous content people don't have a reason to engage. Without the reason to engage you don't have the speed and accuracy of answers.

A lot of multi topic discussion forums also have travel sections as well (whirlpool, reddit, ocau etc.).

I have been on WP for about 10 years, there travel section is quite good, I find it best for info on travel locations, whereas AFF is more focused on the mechanics of getting there. I find the user created guides / faq's especially valuable (the Japan one on WP sticks out), really wish AFF had something similiar.

So in short, no I don't believe there is an overabundance of sites, each have their own good and bad parts and each provides there own set of info to help with travel.

I don't know, I'm a bit ambivalent tbh. On the one hand, I'm a strong believer in free market choice and, generally, fall on the side of more players = more choices = more robust market = better for consumers (of information in this case).

However, all this stuff is social media and that church these days is a huge one - I simply can't engage in a useful way, useful for me or for others, in more than a couple. I had a look at my phone the other day, wechat, viber, line, facebook, google, skype ... blah blah blah, its ridiculous and I don't use most of them most of the time, which means they don't serve their intended purpose. I dumped almost the lot, keeping only 1 that I actually -do- use on a day to day basis.

The thing with forums though is that they are mostly a conversation, happening in real time, but not entirely, they are also a historical record, which can be extremely useful. If everyone has their own forum and is busy chatting to themselves on it, that historical facet is lost and it all just becomes a bunch of noise.

I guess ultimately its all not bad thing. Incumbents will always have the pretenders to the throne snapping at their heels, which will, hopefully, keep the incumbents invigorated. The new players are forced to really innovate, if they are to have any success at all, as they need to present not only something new, but something useful.

InsideFlyer now. The best thing to come out of them post rebranding was the 150% bonus on Lifemiles.

Interesting. I wonder what the strategic drive to build a forum was. It was in desperate need of a revamp to make it mobile friendly, which it now seems to be, but I wouldn't have picked them adding a whole forum. Good luck to them, but I seem to recall a few people start up forums that have turned into wastelands within a few months. (e.g. thefrequentflyer still has a menu item, but the forums themselves seem to have gone)

i'd say a consideration was driving up traffic to increase revenue from advertising?
