I don't know, I'm a bit ambivalent tbh. On the one hand, I'm a strong believer in free market choice and, generally, fall on the side of more players = more choices = more robust market = better for consumers (of information in this case).
However, all this stuff is social media and that church these days is a huge one - I simply can't engage in a useful way, useful for me or for others, in more than a couple. I had a look at my phone the other day, wechat, viber, line, facebook, google, skype ... blah blah blah, its ridiculous and I don't use most of them most of the time, which means they don't serve their intended purpose. I dumped almost the lot, keeping only 1 that I actually -do- use on a day to day basis.
The thing with forums though is that they are mostly a conversation, happening in real time, but not entirely, they are also a historical record, which can be extremely useful. If everyone has their own forum and is busy chatting to themselves on it, that historical facet is lost and it all just becomes a bunch of noise.
I guess ultimately its all not bad thing. Incumbents will always have the pretenders to the throne snapping at their heels, which will, hopefully, keep the incumbents invigorated. The new players are forced to really innovate, if they are to have any success at all, as they need to present not only something new, but something useful.
